The In-Season Tournament is… kinda fun, maybe? The Cavs entered the night 2-1 needing some help to advance as a wild card. They exited 3-1 needing a lot of help to advance as a wild card. The Cavs pushed the pedal to the medal after the first quarter making it a race to point differentials – so much so the JB Bickerstaff left his starters in late into the 4th. In the end, the Cavs came up just short in point differential losing out to the Knicks for the lone wild card spot. The first quarter was all about the Cavs not hitting their 3s (only one) and allowing a lot of 3s. The Cavs also allowed another 50+ FG% 1Q which put them down 4 at quarter's end despite scoring 29 points and playing some good offense themselves. Of course, what...
After a rest day following a tough back-to-back against the Lakers and Raptors, the Cavs take on the Altanta Hawks at RMF. The Hawks are 8-8 overall and 5-3 on the road. The Hawks have lost games to Boston, Indiana, Philly, New York, Miami, and OKC, so they are not beating the best teams but they are taking care of business against the weaker ones. They have lost 5 of their last 8 with two of the three wins against weak sisters Detroit and Washington and the other against 8-8 Brooklyn. The Hawks took a big hit last week as starting forward Jalen Johnson sustained a wrist fracture and will be out several weeks. The 6’8” Johnson is one of the top forwards in the game averaging 14.1 points, 7.3 rebounds, and ranking in the top 5% at his...
Just when the night seemed like it was going to be another heartbreaking loss, the Cavs managed to pull through. For the goodness of Ohio sports this weekend, the Cavs at least helped finish the weekend on a high note. This really ended up being a game of runs, and halves. Both teams traded runs back and forth in the 1st half and with the Raptors leading at the break by 10 points. The Raptors managed to shoot 54% from the field in the 1st half, while the Cavs only managed 17 points in the 2Q. It's been covered (probably too much) in these columns about teams hot start out of the gate against the Cavs. I’m not sure if that’s the players not being ready, teams having a good initial game plan, some luck, or some combination of all three...
An uneven game led to an uneven result. The Cavs led after all three quarters but only outscored the Lakers in the first quarter. It never really felt like the Cavs had control at any one particular point in the game and they ended up falling victim to poor execution down the stretch which is a flashback to some games from last year. The big news tonight was getting Donovan Mitchell and Isaac Okoro back in the lineup to make it as close to a full team (minus Dean Wade and Ty Jerome) as they’ve had in a while. Of course prosperity could never last long for a Cavaliers team as Darius Garland went down after a drive in the 2nd quarter and did not return. He was diagnosed with a neck strain and we’ll see how much time he’ll end up missing...
A lot has been made about where the Cavs stack up amongst the NBA’s contenders. President of Basketball Operations Koby Altman made moves to get them closer but internal improvement of the young core is ultimately the driver of this ship. However, Damian Lillard being traded to Milwaukee; Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis being traded to Boston and Bradley Beal being dealt to Phoenix provided some obstacles for this young core to have to maneuver around to reach their end destination. But within that, one player holds the key to the Cavs future more than all the others: Evan Mobley. No pressure, right? The NBA is built on star power – always has been, always will be. For awhile, it required a dominant big such as Shaquille O’Neal...
