After a day off at home the Cavaliers take on the 5-12 Portland Trail Blazers, who they beat in Portland two weeks ago by a 109-95 score. The Cavs were without Darius Garland while the Blazers were missing Malcolm Brogdan. Both starting point guards are back so we may see more offense on both ends tonight. The Blazers started 3-3 but have since lost 9 of 11. They are really in a tailspin at the moment, but they did upset 9-6 Indiana on the road two days ago so they are not to be taken lightly. The Blazers are pretty good defensively and held the Pacers, who lead the NBA in scoring, to 110 points, 13 under their average. The In-Season Tournament is… kinda fun, maybe? The Cavs entered the night 2-1 needing some help to advance as a wild card. They exited 3-1 needing a lot of help to advance as a wild card. The Cavs pushed the pedal to the medal after the first quarter making it a race to point differentials – so much so the JB Bickerstaff left his starters in late into the 4th. In the end, the Cavs came up just short in point differential losing out to the Knicks for the lone wild card spot. After a rest day following a tough back-to-back against the Lakers and Raptors, the Cavs take on the Altanta Hawks at RMF. The Hawks are 8-8 overall and 5-3 on the road. The Hawks have lost games to Boston, Indiana, Philly, New York, Miami, and OKC, so they are not beating the best teams but they are taking care of business against the weaker ones. They have lost 5 of their last 8 with two of the three wins against weak sisters Detroit and Washington and the other against 8-8 Brooklyn. Just when the night seemed like it was going to be another heartbreaking loss, the Cavs managed to pull through. For the goodness of Ohio sports this weekend, the Cavs at least helped finish the weekend on a high note. This really ended up being a game of runs, and halves. Both teams traded runs back and forth in the 1st half and with the Raptors leading at the break by 10 points. The Raptors managed to shoot 54% from the field in the 1st half, while the Cavs only managed 17 points in the 2Q. An uneven game led to an uneven result. The Cavs led after all three quarters but only outscored the Lakers in the first quarter. It never really felt like the Cavs had control at any one particular point in the game and they ended up falling victim to poor execution down the stretch which is a flashback to some games from last year. The big news tonight was getting Donovan Mitchell and Isaac Okoro back in the lineup to make it as close to a full team (minus Dean Wade and Ty Jerome) as they’ve had in a while.
