A closer look at Enes Kanter

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Back to the basket game usually translates well to pros, so I'm almost certain that Kanter will be a very good scoring big man in the NBA. Really, the choice between Kanter and Valanciunas is not about one being inferior player, its more about which type of player the Cavs want: a bigger Boozer, or a more skilled Varejao.

If that's the case, then the choice is clear: Chicago would love to get rid of Boozer, but the Cavs would only trade Varejao for a star.

That's because Boozer is a lazy loser. My comparisons were based on playing style.

Yep. Kanter's wingspan is only 7'1.5", which is only 1/2" more than Marshon Brooks'. Also his standing reach of 9'1.5" is well below average for a center.
I can see why Washington might be interested in kanter, as he would seemingly be a nice pairing with the long & super-athletic, but offensively challenged JaVale McGee.

Look at the DX database...he's just about right on the average for centers in the atheticism and measurement categories.

That's the average for all center prospects. We all know the center position has become extremely watered-down in the NBA. If you look back at the top 10 center prospects over the past decade, I challenge you to find anyone with a standing reach that is lower than Kanter's (9'1.5"). Why pick an undersized, unathletic center with the #4 pick in the entire draft??

Gladly. The reason I don't like Kanter is this:

-he has a relatively short winsgspan and standing reach for a center, which makes me think he might be more of a power forward in the NBA.
-Kanter isn't very athletic, which means he could struggle against more athletic power forwards.
-from the limited game film, Kanter's defense is pretty atrocious.

He's a guy who is seemingly caught between positions, lacking the size to play center and the athleticism to play power forward.
Yes...these are my concerns with kanter as well...he doesn't have true "center length"...he has the body of a pf more than a center...Jonas has more of a true center body (long arms, etc.).

I guess only time will tell which guy is the right choice...let's just hope we don't end up with a bust and pass on a legit player...it's all on grant to make a good pick.

Because his game is not based on athleticism but rather on footwork and using his body.

Really, some of you people are obsessed with wingspans.

Kanter has an NBA ready body, think this kid will be good. Better than V, but only time will tell.

Wingspan and standing reach measurements are of vital importance because length rules in the NBA. You may find some exceptions, but I'd much rather gamble on someone with the necessary length & athleticism, like Valanciunas has. Valanciunas & Biyombo have a standing reach that is 2.5" beyond what Kanter's is. Again, I think Kanter ends up playing a fair amount of power forward in the NBA.

It also includes super athletic and long busts that keep the average up but never make it, so I still say that average is pretty accurate. Filter on top 15 centers...look at Noah, Kaman, Chandler, Bogut. He is above them in some catergoies and close enough in others. His frame and strength should be an asset too. All I'm worried about is if he has skill and can play. I'd rather take a guy that has a game than a guy with no skill and a 9'6 reach.

Again, if Kanter was a pick n roll type of big, I'd agree. What you have to understand is different players have different skills and styles, and the importance of the said measurements increase and decrease according to those styles.

Kanter has a very solid core and a low center of gravity, which allows him to use his body very effectively. Considering he's a back to the basket big, those two points I just made would be better indicators of his upcoming success than his wingspan and standing reach.

It's important, especially the reach, if the player is not that gifted with athleticism. He lives below the rim and in the NBA he will not be able to get his shot off the way he wants it to compared to the competition he played before. Heck, he dominated Sullinger in the hoops summit who is much smaller than him. Imagine him going against the likes of Ibaka, Chandler, Bynum, Dwight, Noah, Perkins, M.Gasol, P. Gasol, Bogut. I hate Horford at Center and Kanter to me projects to that kind of a mold.

Big, strong, but not particularly athletic, he uses his body extremely well to establish position for himself in the post, where he has plenty of ways to create shots for himself and good touch to finish. He has a great drop-step move, and beautiful pivots. He plays way below the rim, and can finish with either hand. He does a great job with pump-fakes, and is very skilled in the post, although he’s somewhat of a black hole and fairly predictable at times. Defensively, he does not have the agility to stay in front of quicker post players and getting absolutely roasted when forced to step outside on pick and rolls.

That quote is Esteban Batista. That description fits Kanter to a tee.

Are you really comparing Kanter with a guy who went undrafted in a very weak draft? The talent level difference between the two is just..huge.

Not to mention Kanter is 2 inches taller than Batista.

I just compared their games. Both back to the basket bigs with limited athleticism and both undersized at their position.

That is pretty much like comparing Dirk with Yi Jianlian, because they have similar games.
