Re: Cavs sign Earl Clark for 2yrs/$9M

The good news is we have hit the halfway point in Clark's career as a Cav and it is all downhill from here.

Re: Cavs sign Earl Clark for 2yrs/$9M

Clark is shooting 25% from the field over his last ten games. Without the Kings game, he's down to around 20.5%.

Brown was pretty fluid with his rotations earlier this year but I don't know how long Brown is going to be willing to stick with him. Clark's numbers over the last 10 games aren't all that different from Bennett's numbers.

When he puts a guy in the rotation, he usually leaves him there for a string of games to get enough time to make a real evaluation. I suspect Clark is reaching the end of this trial at backup PF.

I realize that. After 10 games, I'm not sure how much more of an evaluation he needs at this point, or if he is just entirely convinced Bennett will be worse.

Re: Cavs sign Earl Clark for 2yrs/$9M

I guess the question is what kind of effort is Bennett putting in at practice. If clark plays many more games, Bennett must be doing something wrong there.

Anyone in DLeague we could possibly sign to replace Clark?

Funny you say this because there actually was a guy in Canton that Nathan brought up. He's a 6'6 SF though. Defines 3&D player though.

We also have Onuaku down there who could play 10 minutes a night for us at PF. He's 6'9" 275 and averaging 23 points on 66% shooting, 12.5 boards, 2 blocks per 36 minutes. I'm, like, 100000% certain he's better than Clark.

I'm not debating you about whether he's better than Clark.

But to bring up anyone from the DL would require the Cavs make a roster move. Tough to do that considering that everyone's contract is now guaranteed for the year. They're not going to cut anyone with an expiring contract, or someone else in the rotation, or a recent 1st-round pick. Doubtful they would cut Felix. So that leaves Dellavedova (not cutting him) and Sims (insurance policy at center).

I think they have to stick with Clark, try Bennett, or play undersized more often until they can swing a trade.

Honest question: Can you think of a scenario where we cut Clark and actually regret it?

Clark is a decent sized expiring so he can help in a potential trade. So yes I can envision a scenario in mid February and regret it. From a playing standpoint, not at all though. He needs to be benched.

His expiring contract has value.

I agree with Tecumseh. I don't think they'll cut any expiring contract, including Gee who doesn't make as much and has barely played for weeks.

What makes it frustrating is that there aren't obviously better solutions on the roster if Clark gets benched. Not looking forward to going way smaller, not looking forward to Bennett, not excited about Deng playing out of position with three guards.

Re: Cavs sign Earl Clark for 2yrs/$9M

You guys can enlighten me because I'm pretty clueless when it comes to salary things, but what all can we do with an expiring? I mean, we're obviously not going to take back a multi-year contract unless it's a star, right? The only scenario I can imagine us needing Clark and Gee's expirings would be some sort of blockbuster involving Clark+Gee+Waiters+Picks for a star.
