Sterling surrenders control of Clippers to Shelly (pg 35)

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Ladies and Gentleman: the reigning NBA champion Miami Heat.

These men, and their colleagues on other teams, have power because they are the talent in an entertainment business; without the talent there is no business. At its heart, it is simply a matter of self respect; they simply aren't having it.

The NBA leadership has determined that the exercise of this power will be distasteful to the public, and therefore brings the potential for significant negative impact to league revenue.

As has been noted, corporate sponsors have the power to affect league revenue in this situation as well, which they will yield for a entirely different set of reasons.

These scenario must be avoided at all costs by a league in ever-increasing competition for the marginal entertainment dollar.

It has nothing to do with free speech or privacy. It is about a franchise holder who let his sordid lifestyle expose his personal bullshit to the public in a manner which proved unacceptable to to the above stakeholders, and thereby put league revenues at risk. Nothing more, nothing less.

Donald Sterling has to go, and has to go quickly.

Its cute that you think the players are any more than sideshow entertainment for this

What Sterling is not interested in doing is paying the capital gains tax on his forced sale. I think this is what the fight boils down to for him at this point- he wants compensation from the NBA for that, since it is money lost for him on his net worth.

As for the players forcing a decision here... yeah, I would call their bluff. Sterling being a known bigot didn't stop Chris Paul from resigning there. Didn't stop Doc Rivers from going there. Hasn't stopped 34 years of NBA players cashing their Clippers' paychecks. This isn't anything new. And I really don't see LBJ boycotting a game vs. the Thunder because Don Sterling still owns a team in LA. This has everything to do with greasing the skids for Magic to get the Clippers (and open up LA for LBJ) and only a little with removing an idiot from an owner's suite.

Sterling will be getting 3 billion by the time this is all over apparently... If the offers they aŕe gettimg now without the team being officially for sale are 2.5 billion, 3 billion is a safe bet.

So, if I am hearing all of this correctly, he is still trying to fight to keep the team even though he surrenders control of the Clippers to Shelly?

Allegedly he has agreed to sell the team.

Allegedly he has agreed to sell the team.

he's agreeing and fighting at the same time

Donald Sterling's lawyer, Max Blecher, told ESPN on Tuesday that his client "is going to fight to the bloody end" and has effectively "disavowed" the agreement he reached with his wife last week that would allow her to negotiate a sale of the team.

"I don't know what agreement she has with him, but I'm saying to you today, he disavows anything she's doing to sell the team," Blecher said. "He says, 'It's my team, and I'll sell it when and if I get around to it.'"

It's pretty absurd that his team that was valued at a half billion team is going to sell for around $2 billion, if not more, and his apparent complaint is having to pay capital gains taxes on that extra gain.

Wow....

@ZachLowe_NBA: Other 29 owners doing jumping jacks. Jordan's group got the Hornets almost for free

Other owners must be thrilled. The Kings and Bucks both fetched a good price. Now the Clips price has hit the motherload.

On another note Roger Goodell probably took note. Wouldn't be surprised if we hear noises about an NFL team back in LA in the not so distant future.

so how hard does he push a move to seattle? it's obv way less likely given he [supposedly] bought the clippers as opposed to, say, the kings. but he's still worth many billions, so he could afford to take the hit in value.

he's going to have to deny any intent to move them and to get the sale to go through. I imagine at some point he'll try unless the league gets a team in Seattle before then.

That TV market deal upcoming would only have value in LA. Clippers aent going anywhere. thats if the sale is completed

I doubt it. Paul Allen will know him and likely not care if they move. He hasn't seen old Supersonics fans flocking to his team. The Buss family would probably be thrilled if the Clippers leave.

Ballmer will probably sit on the Clipper in LA for a few years, but Ballmer has been involved in backing a new Seattle arena. There is concern that that may fall apart if he does become the Clippers' owner. I'm not so sure. There are lease issues with the Staples Center to go with crummy TV deals for the Clippers. The move to Seattle and an attempt to reclaim the Supersonics name seem like they may happen. Ballmer will know Allen from Microsoft and I expect he can use Paul Allen to get support for a move. The recovery of the Hornets to Charlotte also may entice the NBA. This doesn't have the political issues of what has happened in Sacramento. LA does not need two teams and the Lakers would probably prefer to not share a venue anymore, especially after last year.

Betcha we'll see the Seattle Supersonics reborn in the next five years.

Why would it matter? They have a team in LA and none in Seattle. Seattle has 3.5 million people in the region that the Blazers can't really hit. Not having the Clippers in LA will not impact the deal. Besides, a move would happen long after a contract is signed. The contracts don't stipulate that teams can't move.
