A Closer Look at Andrew Wiggins

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Don't know why people say this kid doesn't have handles. His handlees and footwork look phenomenal. And his jumper? Thing of beauty. This kid is going to be a bonafide star in the league.

Did you miss the 4-5 times he caught the ball/dribbled the ball with his wrist? Thats an edited video too and theyre still showing that.

His J is nice though. Ive always loved the form on it.

Why does he need to have excellent handles? He isn't going to be handling the ball a ton. I'd like to think they will improve too.

It's the week of the draft, making it a little easier to catch these things, but it really makes you think how much of this all is manufactured and how much is crappy journalism, with writers and analysts talking about something because it's their job. Here's a staff writer at the Washington Post talking about how the Cavs should take Andrew Wiggins, even though he showed up to his Cavs workout overweight, lacking motivation.

Except that was the report on Parker's workout. It's laughable.

Realistically you don't go from handling the ball like that to where it becomes a strength. He can improve it to where he isn't dribbling it off of his foot in games. And you're right that we don't need him to handle the ball right now. But after they deal Waiters he will have to, or someone will. One guy dominating the ball will never win anything.

Handles look sloppy to me and the video above is a workout video designed to showcase his positive abilities and cover up his weaknesses. If you really watch game tape of him you see him missing a ton of layups and attempting to use the same move over and over again to create separation. Like many critics lately he was able to use his athletic ability to get by but when you get to the Nba I really think he will be in for a hard first few seasons.

I think the kid will be special but to me he is not worthy of the number one pick and I really think he is going to struggle next year with the criticism and pressure to live up to the hype.

No, his handles don't look beautiful. His jumper is nice though.

Any starting SF should be able to to create his own shot, take anyone off the dribble and drive without creating their own turnovers.

He's not worthy of the #1 pick because there is a better prospect available, but if they are turned off by that guy's injuries, Wiggins is the best that is left. He would be perfect with Irving and Waiters handling the playmaking duties and hitting Wiggins for open shots and cuts to the rim. But if we dump Waiters, then Wiggins will definitely struggle to score unless we get someone like LeBron in here.

That's just not realistic. Luol Deng can't do that. Trevor Ariza can't. Paul George can't even do those things consistently. LeBron and Durant can do it. That's about it. And Wiggins isn't LeBron or Durant.

Good thing Wiggin's won't be handling the ball much and he'll have the whole season to learn and improve on what he needs to in order to become a star. All sources tout him as a hard worker and with his elite potential, it's hard to see him fall anywhere short of worthy of the #1 pick.

Recent tweets summary: Chad Ford now predicts Wiggins to Cleveland after his source talked about the alleged Cavs fight last night between owner and GM; says last year Gilbert wanted Oledipo and GM wanted Bennett; and says Wiggins the better fit should LeBron come back.

Per Stein: Parker said not opposed to going to Cleveland, but thinks he's going to go to the Bucks due to vibe he felt there, but did not feel with Cleveland.

Lebron and Durant are not the only PF/SF's who have handles and don't created TO's when they have the ball.

I know offensive positions are increasingly blurry, but Wiggins simply isn't a SF. His length and athleticism will allow him to guard most (not all) SFs, but he really can't function as a prototypical SF on offense. He's gonna be a transition monster, spot up ace, and a great cutter. But I'd feel more confident if Waiters had the ball in the half court. And Irving of course.

His handle looks tight to me and it will get better over time. Handles are one thing that tend to increase directly with experience. A broken jump shot may never be fixed. Unathleticism can't be fixed. Height can't be fix. But handles improve over time. James is the perfect example of that. His handle was very sloppy coming into the league. They tried to turn him into a Magic Johnson type point forward right in his rookie season, because his passing skills were so good, but his handle just wasn't up to the task. I remember instances in his rookie year when a good defender like Baron Davis would guard him and he'd be completely bottled up or turning it over just trying to bring the ball up the court.
