2016 Cleveland Indians

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
If they completely abandon the chief (I hope not), they need to bring back the 70s crooked C logo and those uniforms.

Give up the name and bring back Cleveland's real name imo

Would love if they went to the Spiders, but they were the city's expansion NL team. The Indians are one of the charter franchises in the AL, so you would have to go back the the Blues if you want this franchises actual first name.

Good thing I bought a Wahoo hat two years ago. The people who want Chief Wahoo gone aren't even Native Americans, they're people who think Natives want him gone.

Even if they went back to the original name of the NL team it would still be Blues though they were Spiders when they entered the NL (The name Forest City was used instead of Cleveland, it wasn't the Cleveland Forest Citys, it was simply the Forest City club of whatever year)

I'm going more on names they originally were when the entered the AL and NL respectively, and became MLB franchises. Nobody wants to be the Cleveland Forrest Citys or the Cleveland Lake Shores.

Except for, y'know, the Native Americans who want him gone and are at the home opener EVERY SINGLE YEAR.

This stuff always makes me scratch my head. My fiance is from Farmington, NM, which is pretty much right next to a Navajo reservation. Want to guess the most common sports apparel stuff I see out there? Braves, Redskins, Florida State...and the Indians (I'm pretty sure I even saw someone wearing an old Miami Redskins shirt one time)...I don't get it...most of the Natives I've talked to in passing wearing Tribe gear (maybe 4 or 5, so not a whole bunch) have always said the same message...they are happy the Native groups are being exposed to newer and newer generations, even if its through sports, because it usually leads to them learning about the history of American Natives.

I really wonder what the actual % of legit Native's actually are mad at the logo. Certainly my experience isn't the end all be all because it was only a handful of people, but man, a lot of white people seem to be involved in calling for the chief to go away...

"A survey conducted in 2002 by The Harris Poll for Sports Illustrated (SI) found that 81 percent of Native Americans who live outside traditional Indian reservations and 53 percent of Indians on reservations did not find the images discriminatory. The authors of the article concluded that "Although most Native American activists and tribal leaders consider Indian team names and mascots offensive, neither Native Americans in general nor a cross section of U.S. sports fans agree. "

"More recent surveys, rather than addressing the larger issue, have targeted the controversy over the name of the Washington Redskins, asking if the word is offensive or if it should be changed. By a large majority (71-89 percent), public opinion has maintained that the name should not change, but when additional questions were asked also have found that the same respondents said "redskin" is not an appropriate term for Native Americans."

Cleveland Indians owner Paul Dolan learned painful lessons from signings of Swisher, Bourn -- Terry Pluto
http://www.cleveland.com/pluto/index.ssf/2016/04/cleveland_indians_owner_paul_d_6.html

So he learned his lesson but promoted those responsible?

Come on man...nice to look at things using hindsight, but the consensus around those 2 signings were all positive at the time they occurred. Swisher because we had an absurdly young team who needed a veteran voice (on top of needing someone to stabilize the middle of the order), and Bourn because they got him cheaper than expected with him coming off of a 6 WAR season. Also, I'm willing to bet Antonetti and Chernoff had less of a voice with Shapiro still here...I think that's common sense.

But you could see Bourn dwindling in production because he was getting older at the time he signed (maybe not this much dwindling this quickly) and so much of his game relied on speed, but no one could have predicted Swisher falling off of a cliff at the dish with an approach that usually ages gracefully and seeing his body deteriorate. Those 2 helped take us to the playoffs (fuck off if you say a 1 game WC isn't the playoffs, it gave a young core a taste of games after 162) for the first time in 6 years, and have paved the way for guys like Brantley and Kipnis to takeover as the leaders of the team, vocally.

Hopefully by "learned their lessons" he means tying up older guys for multiple years, and next time they give out a multi year deal to a FA, its to someone still trending up.

Sometimes people become so insistent on telling people what they should be offended by that they themselves become offended by it.

That or they are 1/64th native american, in which case I completely understand the outrage. But then at that point I wonder the internal struggle these people go through. The 63/64th of them totally stole the land from the 1/64th in them.

Make no mistake, fans like you were responsible for those signings.

"Why won't they spend moniez!! I hate the Dolanz!! Fans don't show up because they don't spend moniez on the teem"

Finally gamble and spend money, gets them to the playoffs for the first time in half a decade...players they sign see their bodies deteriorate and are traded.

"Stupid decisions...and now they are promoting those who spent the money? Stupid Dolanz"...

That's pretty much a summary of this place during the season, and why I will happily enjoy my time somewhere else talking about the Tribe once the season starts with people who actually like talking about baseball instead of bitching and moaning about ownership.
