Since there was some discussion regarding the offensive coordinator position in here, I'll list some names I'd be interested in if the position comes open (in no particular order):
Major Applewhite - OC/QB coach - Houston: He had an affair with a Texas student while he was a coach there, so people are speculating he may not follow/may not be allowed to follow Herman to UT this time around. Still a young guy with plentiful connections to the state of Texas.
UPDATED - Hired as HC at Houston
Matt Canada - OC/QB coach - Pitt: Finalist for the Broyles Award (best assistant in the country); has Midwestern roots (Indiana native, coaching stops at Indiana, Northern Illinois, Wisconsin and now Pitt); has the ability to tailor to his personnel, but still tends to be more run oriented.
UPDATED - Hired as OC at LSU
Kevin Wilson - former HC - Indiana: Not much was said during IU's presser yesterday regarding his dismissal. If it is in fact for playing injured guys, then he immediately gets taken off the list. If his transgressions were more benign ("difference of philosophy"), then he'd be a top contender. Ran some great offenses at Oklahoma and did a nice job making over a fledgling program at IU.
UPDATED - Many rumors swirling Urban met with him before the Fiesta Bowl; considered leader in the clubhouse should changes to the offensive staff occur
Brian Brohm - co-OC/QB coach - Western Kentucky: Brother of WKU head coach Jeff Brohm, so he may stick with him no matter where Jeff ends up, but Brian was a great player at Louisville and has been part of a WKU staff that has presided over some incredibly prolific offenses.
UPDATED - Followed his brother Jeff to Purdue to serve as co-OC/QB coach
Sonny Cumbie - co-OC/QB coach - TCU: Down year for TCU, but they too have been explosive in the last few years since Gary Patterson brought on Cumbie and co-OC Doug Meacham. Cumbie is similar to Applewhite in that he's a young guy with Texas roots who played the QB position in college.
UPDATED - No change here. Still a guy I'd be interested in
Mike Sanford, Jr. - OC/QB coach - Notre Dame: Urban tried to land him two years ago after Herman's departure, but he decided on ND after being given the reigns as a playcaller. His dad was Urban's OC at Utah, so there's some familiarity there. Strong recruiting prowess, as he was the recruiting coordinator at Stanford under David Shaw. Could be willing to leave ND with the uncertainty regarding Brian Kelly's future. He's also a young guy and former college QB at Boise St.
UPDATED - Hired as HC at Western Kentucky
Sterlin Gilbert - former OC/QB coach - Texas: He's obviously on the market after Charlie Strong's departure, but I think he did a decent job in his first year at UT, and the defense was the main culprit of their demise this season. Comes from the Baylor tree, but coordinated an offense that produced a 2,000 yard rusher in D'Onta Foreman. Also had coaching stops, albeit brief, with Dino Babers at Eastern Illinois and Bowling Green, so there's a small tie to the Midwest.
UPDATED - Following Charlie Strong to USF to serve as OC/QB coach
ETA: Couple more names I forgot:
Brian Johnson - QB coach - Mississippi State: Recruited by Urban and played for him in one season at Utah; has served as an OC in the past at Utah; coaching under Urban disciple Dan Mullen; turns 30 in February, so very young; position coach for one of the hottest QB names in the NFL right now for two seasons (Dak Prescott in '14 and '15).
UPDATED - Hired as OC/QB coach at Houston
Drew Mehringer - OC/QB coach - Rutgers: Served as a GA under Urban and Tom Herman at Ohio State for two seasons ('12 & '13), so he knows the style of offense very well; only 28 years old; served as Houston's recruiting coordinator for the 2015 season; Texas native.
UPDATED - Hired by Tom Herman to serve as Passing Game Coordinator at Texas
Ultimately, I doubt Warinner and Beck are gone unless the offense is a complete disaster in the playoff game
(UPDATED - This is what happened ) or Warinner gets a head coaching gig and takes Beck along to be his OC.
