completely agree with you JB. My gf just wouldn't shut the hell up about how bad she wanted to see it, and I was even slightly excited; a half hour in, I was thinking this has to start giving a hint that it's going somewhere. Toward the end, I'm thinking okay they can atone for a shit plot with an excellent twist or climax -- nope.

I'm not sure I've ever seen a movie where less happened. Literally the entire movie is Amy Adams receiving a manuscript from her ex husband and reading it. The trailers were also incredibly deceiving. They made it look as if all the Jake Gyllenhaal stuff was a part of the actual story, but in reality his entire role is essentially portraying the main character from the mediocre book he sent his ex. He also appears in a couple of flashbacks, but they don't really go anywhere either.

They also made it seem like what she'd done to him was far more horrible than what she'd actually done. I mean, don't get me wrong, what she did was bad, but by movie standards it just felt really tame. I guess that's why his revenge was ultimately so petty.

Still have yet to see it but hoping to cross it off the list by the end of the weekend. Of the nominated films i have seen, i'd rank them as:

1. Arrival
2. Hacksaw Ridge
3. Manchester By The Sea
4. Hell or High Water
5. Moonlight

edit; the best part of Moonlight is that it introduced me to Janelle Monae. My god is she pretty.
Also, here's my ranking of them...and it changes from time to time

La La Land
Hell or High Water
Hidden Figures
Hacksaw Ridge
Fences/Arrival (go back and forth)
Moonlight
Lion

Manchester

Why MBTS so low? Thought it was a really well made film front to back.

Acting was certainly good, and the scene with Affleck and Michelle Williams on the sidewalk was maybe the best acted scene of any movie last year.

2 things that bothered me, personally.

One: I am not a big fan of movies that spend a lot of time with showing how "realistic" their characters are. There's multiple scenes worth of Casey Affleck taking out garbage, shoveling snow, driving in traffic, walking on the sidewalk, etc. There's realism in movies, then there is just wasting time.

Two: And more importantly, no one in the movie was likeable. Not one character. I understand it's a movie about the grieving process, but give me SOMEONE to root for. Anyone.

Affleck is a jerk. The kid is a jerk. The kids mom is a jerk. Everybody in town is a jerk. Just a bunch of assholes doing asshole things. I don't care if any of them sufficiently grieved, because I dislike all of them.

I didn't necessarily need a happy ending, just some happiness is the movie somewhere.

Character pieces show the bad with the good. Some people can relate to his personality/issues.

Logan

Overall, it was very interesting and a lot to like.

A lot of the reviews billed as "transcending the comic book genre". I think that's overstating it a bit. It's definitely one of the slower, better acted, more thoughtful and character driven comic movies I've seen. We may see future superhero films more character driven. Or maybe this is a one off.

Also, don't take your kids. Very bloody and a ton of swearing.

I read that there wasn't an end credit scene and trusted them. Did you stick around and see?

No, cause the director himself said there wasn't. Feel like the "pre movie" scene took care of that.

Didn't like Hell or High Water? That was #2 on my list of the nominated movies.

Monae was also in Hidden Figures. She had a much more prominent role, and a lot of people, including me, thought she was the best actor in the movie.

The whole time I was watching Hidden Figures, I kept thinking to myself, "I know that woman... who is she?" Finally was able to look it up afterwards and was a little shocked it was her. Thought she was fantastic in that movie.

Saw Logan.

I'm not a comic book guy so I don't know much, but I'd give it a 9/10. Really enjoyed it. I'd say it definitely transcends the comic book genre, judging by the movies I've seen from Marvel and DC or whatever. Those other movies are fun and whatnot, but "fun" is not the term I'd use to describe this film. It's pretty brutal. The action scenes were off the chain. Kind of made me wish they had directed a trilogy about Wolverine in this style. I know there are other Wolverine films but not like this from what I gather.

It's going to be damn near impossible for them to adequately replace Jackson as Wolverine. I honestly don't know how they'll do it, or if they'll just leave him out of future films because they know they can't.

Yeah, like I said, not a huge comic book fan or anything but even I see Jackman's portrayal of Wolverine as iconic. And of course

*spoiler if you havent seen it yet*

maybe they'll just leave him out from now on since he died at the end of Logan, though apparently that's some "alternate universe" or some shit?

I tried reading about where this movie falls in the timeline and whatnot, and just got totally fucking confused. I just look at it as a stand alone. These comic book timelines are so ridiculous.

Didn't they say it was 2029?

The only way they could effectively do it is cast a very young Logan but his origin story was part of the first X-men movie so it will be a tough task regardless. Glad to hear the movie delivers. Hoping to catch it this weekend.

How dare you tell me to raise my non existent children!
