Welcome Larry Sanders and So Long

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Seems like he will be wearing #9. Hopefully he can live up to our history of great centers wearing the same number:

It's been reported 15 other teams showed interest in him. 15. That's a pretty large number, and Golden State was also one of them according to those same reports, and some of their beat guys. So it's not like he had no other teams showing interest. Maybe those teams didn't offer a contract, yet, but they definitely were watching the situation and considering it.

Yeah, his agent reported that. If there were 15 teams that called back his agent that's not a high bar. He had multiple workouts including here, Boston, etc. They didn't reportedly go very well as everyone marveled at how out of shape he was and how much muscle he had lost. He didn't come away from those with any offers at all. He very clearly made a marked improvement his second time through and I think that growth is what led to this deal. That maybe there was some hope of realizing some of that lost potential.

If there was actual demand they never would have ceded the TO for next year.

I have given up football. I have (mostly) given up college basketball. I watch the Bucks and Cavs religiously. There are a lot of Bucks fans that felt really bad about what happened to Bogey and are wishing it on Sanders. You couldn't find two players whose attitudes are more diametrically opposed.

Expect this to go a weird direction. It may go well, it may not. But it won't go exactly like anyone thinks its going to. He is just that kind of dude.

The crazy thing about this is that Bogut's departure from the Milwaukee Bucks (he was the starter on that team) allowed Sanders to flourish the following year!! Some interesting parallels or similarities but yet also different circumstances. Definitely eager to see how this pans out!

Yeah guys the Cavs biggest hole on the roster is a backup, defensive-minded big man. So naturally they chose Larry Sanders (over other NBA big men who have played much more recently than he has), to fill their only available spot and permanently stash him in the D League and not count on him come playoff time.

No chance they think he'll make an impact at all. Makes total sense.

I may be crazy but Boguts tweet makes me think we have a legit shot at getting him cheap next year. He obviously isn't mad about getting waived. His spot will be open regardless of how Larry plays. Something to keep an eye on.

As for LS. Well. Regardless of what goes down, I think it's obvious the Cavs made the right move. We'll see what happens.

Bogut wasn't just a starter on the Bucks. He was the franchise. He was the #1 overall pick and before his gruesome injury he was actually a great offensive player (and has always been a great defensive player). He scored 16ppg and led the 09-10 Bucks until his freak (I was going to put in a pic but it was pretty gruesome) injury at the end of the season destroyed the mojo of the team that had been one of the hottest teams in the league the second half of the season.

That injury was nasty and the team had come to rely on a rim protecting presence so after that season the Bucks drafted Sanders, the 2 time DPoY in the conference. His growth made Bogut, who never really came back offensively from the injury, expendable.

But other than being able to protect the rim the two are polar opposites. Bogut is a great passer and high post player. Sanders is at his best as a roll man and cannot be allowed to touch the ball at the high post (or its going up at shockingly poor %s). The advancement of that 5 that protects the rim, is mobile, and can rim run is really important in the league today. And why we are giving him another shot.

I thought this was pretty telling too. Great point.

Yeah, after Bogut's rant about two-faced organizations earlier in the year, I think he just wants honesty. I was hoping we'd do right by him, sit down with him and tell him that we want him next year, it was hard for us to make this decision, he's a Cav this year in spirit, but we need his spot.

I think you're right. He's gonna be watching and it seems he still has a connection to this team.

No-one can really know what we'll get out of Sanders. We can all speculate on the best case and worst case scenarios.

Lue, Kyrie and Lebron all seem to be willing to give it an honest effort to make it work. Like coach Lue said it will all depend on the mental attitude of Sanders which can only be described as a wild card. Whether it comes up Aces or Jokers or somewhere between is anybody's guess.

Like a lot of things this kind of serves as a Rorschach test for any fan trying to evaluate it. With good reason Cleveland fans often tend to fall on the pessimistic side, or depending on one's past experiences with depression or just with following Sanders himself I can understand any pessimistic outlooks on this signing.

I think he'll be an asset but I'm usually optimistic about such things.

At this point we had to sign him. But I just wish we would have gone after JaVale before the season.

Our interior defense will never be great but our rebounding will be better when:
1. We actually make an effort.
2. Love gets back.
3. We make stop making TT guard pretty much everyone.

FYI -- from the guy who covers the Charge.

Expecting him to come in and play 15-20 minutes consistently and actually have a positive impact on games, and playing a handful of possessions in a game where he doesn't screw up are two entirely different things. I'm seeing far more of the former.

I don't think it's fair to Larry or fans here to expect him to do, well, anything to contribute to a title on a consistent basis. Can he come in for a game, block a shot and grab a couple boards? Sure. But the guy willingly walked away from the game and has been out of it for basically three years. You don't just get brought off the street after not playing at all for multiple years and become a real contributor to a title team. Just doesn't happen.

Dahntay Jones spent an entire year in the d league after years in the NBA and made, basically, two plays in a title run. If Larry Sanders gives this team two momentum swinging plays in a title run, that's basically hitting the jackpot.

My post stands, you didn't address any of my points within it. I think my expectations for him are very level headed and fair, but you seem to believe you have more information to form an opinion than the people running the team do. It's odd to me. I stand by my strong belief that they hope for and plan to use him situationally as needed in the playoffs and have a plan to get him ready to do so. Or they wouldn't have signed him right now, they simply would have waited till the offseason.

And using a 35 year old Dhantay limited basketball skills Jones as an example is dubious at best.. for a lot of reasons, not the least of which the need for Sanders to play and play 'now' dwarfs that of Jones.
