2018 Draft Prospects Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
He has everything you could possibly want out of a QB prospect on the field.

He does force things at times, but that is something that can easily be fixed. Him playing with no other good players doesn't help that cause either. Hopefully we have some weapons for him next year...

At this point, if we get #1 and don't take Rosen, I'm going to be pissed (baring anything crazy happening). Dude is gonna be good. Mayfield MAY be good, but he has at least one huge limitation. Rosen was built to be an NFL Qb.

I think people overstate the talent Darnold has around him. Outside of Ronald Jones, who is a very good RB, his receiver talent and offensive line have been below average. His offensive line is a turn-style and he makes a lot of plays. He also has made too many mistakes in the face of pressure.

I'm still a huge believer in Darnold. I love his arm strength, compact throwing motion, his escapability, and beyond that....just the kid himself. Doesn't do twitter, hates the limelight, just likes to compete.

It's probably not the best mehod to use.....but do you want the rich HS/College playboy who puts hot tubs in his dorm, and openly displays his entitlement on a regular basis.....nothing against Charles Rosen, who is one of the best spine surgeons in the world, but Josh hasn't had much adversity nor time outside of the Los Angeles bubble.

Or would you rather take the kid whose mom is a PE teacher, his dad is a gas plumber, and his grandfather's name is Dick Hammer and once got to be the "Marlboro Man".

Darnold and his family are actually kind of a microcosm of what Cleveland is about....Family built on hard work and labor. Rosen would fucking hate Cleveland. I think Darnold would embrace it....

Just my opinion.....

why do you feel that darnold would embrace cleveland when the rumors are that he is thinking about returning to school if browns are the top pick?

Rosen does have an offputting vibe and does some head scratching things (f-trump hat, hot tub, ncaa vs school interview), but id hesitate about projecting full blown narratives onto individuals. I think manziel has every browns fan scared of taking anyone that resembles him in any way.

I like darnold and rosen as prospects. I really think rosen is a better qb prospect right now. At the end of the day i just want the prospect that will get wins, not the one that fits the city's vibe. That would just be a bonus.

Darnold already stated privately he wants to AVOID the Browns at all costs. This guy screams BUST and turnover machine at the next level.

1a. Mayfield
1b. Rosen

2. Rudolph

3. Darnold

I just read up on Dick Hammer, and I have nothing but respect for Darnold's grandfather. His life story is like the Genghis Kahn of Southern California, and I bet there are plenty other kids around Sam Darnold's age who are actually Dick Hammer's grandchildren and don't even know it.

That said, USC has become get the ball to Ronald Jones II first, Darnold play action off the run second. That was because a pass-first offense with Darnold led to too many turnovers. Forget about wanting to be on the Browns or not, Darnold doesn't look ready to be a week one starting QB in the NFL for at least another season of grooming.

Agreed on full blown narratives....I could be way off on Rosen, it's just the vibe I get.

I don't believe the rumors about Darnold....that's an easy/lazy narrative create. Browns are likely to have #1 pick and Darnold will likely weigh the pros and cons of going back for 1 more year. It's an incredibly easy rumor to start to get some clicks.....Darnold, IMO, doesn't seem like the type of get to strong-arm himself out of a situation. If he goes back to USC for another season, I'm not just going to assume it's because he wanted to avoid CLE. Shit, CLE may not even want him......

Rosen's question marks are his "personality" and his injury history. I actually view his strong willed attitude as a positive. Both of his parents are Ivy-league educated and he's self aware of how privileged he is to be in his position.

From this article:

This leads to media labeling him "cocky" and "entitled". You can certainly argue this is true with how he carries himself, but his parents background is attractive to me and give him great genetics. In a way, he was simply born better than other people and has taken full advantage of his advantages.

As for his injuries - knee, hand, and head - those are always concerning. However I'm not a believer in red flagging QB's due to their treatment at the NFL. They are by far the most protected position and it has kept QB injuries to a minimum. The NFL does not benefit in any way with the Aaron Rodgers' and Andrew Luck's on the IR.

Rosen's positives? Mechanics, arm strength, quick release, footwork, mobility, NFL readiness. His pro comparison is a more talented Matt Ryan. He can be inconsistent at times by trying to do it all on his own, but that's also the structure of his team. With a Josh Gordon, Corey Coleman, David Njoku, and Rookie RB/Duke Johnson supporting cast? Wew.

My only fear is him forcing a trade away from the Browns on draft night. Even at this point in the season I can't see them passing on him should we end up at #1 overall.

I am glad you posted that. His background and his parentage tell me two things:

1) From a genetic standpoint it is highly likely he inherited at least some of his parent's raw intelligence. Systems can be taught but mental aptitude cannot. I think the most underrated thing about Carson Wentz is his intelligence. He had straight-As in High School and College. He scored a 40 on the Wonderlic which is a 99th percentile. Needless to say, NFL QBs need brain power as much, if not more, than arm strength.

For me Rosen's Wonderlic will be an important measure. You can't teach smarts.

2) Rosen recognizes he won the lottery in life. He has sapience. Self-awareness is the key to developing intellectually and socially. As for his controversial statements, which aren't that controversial, it seems to me he is a guy smart enough to recognize bullshit when he sees it can call it out.

Then again, he also exhibits the arrogance that intelligence often creates in young people. This plays a role in his tendency to try to do too much during games. He can use a little maturity and learn that discretion is sometimes the better part of valor.

@billmac91 may disagree, but I see Rosen's background as not a problem at all. Indeed, I think he greatly benefits from what he inherited genetically.

As for his political views and perceived coastal elitism: Even the most Trumpy of Browns fans will gladly build this kid a statute if he regularly pounds the Steelers and Ravens into the mud.

Agreed on the intelligence....

I guess where you see potential positive traits, I see potential red flags.

It takes a certain sense of entitlement, not giving a fuck, to put a hot tub in your dorm room. It takes a certain arrogance to say "you want to own the world". It takes a small lack of awareness to call out DeShaun Watson for graduating in 3 years and simply saying some schools are better harder than others. He's not wrong, it was just a generalized statement and my guess is he had no idea what Watson studied even if he was right.....

If he has fathers intelligence, he should certainly do well on the wonderlic.....guy was nearly appointed as Surgeon General by Obama.

In terms of not wanting to play in CLE (to a different point earlier), I'd put money on Rosen trying to re-direct his location before Darnold. Again, just my opinion.

If he had any intention of staying in California, Jimmy G nixed it for him.

But, I can't imagine he'd say no to becoming the Crown Prince in NY.

However, if all the top QB prospects make it known they don't want to be Cleveland the jig is up and someone is going to be unhappy.

Guys, seriously, how often do players actually redirect themselves on draft night? Eli and who else?

We spend a really disproportionate amount of time talking about something that’s extremely immaterial

Even then it's way too early to take any of those rumored threats seriously. They still have Bowl season, Senior Bowl, Pro Days, and Combine left.
