2018 NBA Draft - June 21

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Who do you guys think are the most cerebral players in this class? I think most of the excellent players that were taken later in the lottery are usually the guys wit high bball understanding, this is how their “lack” of physical (or just displayed) tools and skills are cowered. Talent alone is very important, but smart players can be really useful from the start even on such a high level contender that we are. San Antonio has incredible in depth evaluations of their targets..
Bamba top3, Doncic looks smart(definitely on Offense), but probably top3 (saw some projections with him falling to 5...), Jaren Jackson shows incredible ways of influencing the game in different ways, Trae seems to understand a lot about the game and what to do.
Who else do you see as a smart player that could be available without top 5 selection?

Mikal Bridges from Villanova looks like a very heady player from what little I've seen. He's played college ball for a few years by now so I guess it is to be somewhat expected, but even so he looks very even keeled and meassured in the way he plays, especially on defense. He is very disciplined and is very good at using his length so he gets a ton of steals and blocks just off of being a good, long athlete with good timing and the mind to take advantage of it. Offensively he's limited with the ball in his hands but he's a knockdown shooter and he's smart enough to not overreach and try and do things he isn't good at. I personally see him as a guy who could walk into the NBA tomorrow and probably be an above average 3 and D guy in the league right away.

Ridiculous buzzer beater by freshman Tremont Waters to take down #11 Texas A&M. He's averaging an efficient 17.5 points, 6 assists, 3.5 boards, and 2.4 steals per game.

The catch is that he's 5'11, 167 pounds. Keep an eye on him though...he plays a lot bigger than that.

He is good, but he is no Kay Felder.

After tonight's game, Jontay Porter's per-40 averages stand at 14.7 points, 12.0 boards, 3.9 assists, 1.8 steals, and 4.0 blocks. Rare skillset for a guy who's younger than a lot of high school seniors.

Trae Young is getting eaten up by Jevon Carter of WVU right now. He has 2 buckets, one was off of his own pass which should have been stolen and the other was a banked 3 which was almost definitely lucky. Carter just stripped the ball in an iso situation and blocked his 3 point attempt on back to back plays. Lets see if he can regroup after he comes back into the game.

Jevon Carter's the real deal...his ability to get his hands on the ball defensively is Chris Paul-like. Might be the best senior in this draft.

Yeah, I circled this game as a must watch for this matchup alone. So far Trey's been able to get a couple of cheap touch fouls to get to the line, but advantage Carter in a big way when they've been matched up.

Young has benefited from some questionable foul calls in the second half, but credit to him for continuing to force the issue. Clearly testing the limits of his stamina here.

Yeah, I was just about to comment that the college refs are getting really whistle happy as usual. That foul where Carter clearly got all ball and stripped/blocked the shot and got called for his 3rd foul was a huge turning point in the game. He's still getting nothing easy, but at least he adjusted and is trying to play through it.

Oklahoma would be so much better if they had a backup point guard to keep Young fresh. It would cut into his ridiculous assist numbers a little, but he'd be an even more dangerous scorer, especially late in games.

Also, Young and Doncic both have really punchable faces. People are going to hate them :chuckle:

Bagley is awful on defense. Players can obviously improve, but defensively gifted bigs almost always show that defensive prowess from the very beginning. I don’t think he’s the franchise player he was made out to be.

He kinda reminds me of Bosh. But it took Bosh years and Miami boot camp to become a difference maker on D.

It's about time for me to update my tier-based rankings, but I'm not sure there's much to change. The gaps between the top 3 tiers have gotten slightly smaller, and the gap between the third and fourth tiers has gotten slightly larger. I don't think any further players have earned a spot in that fourth tier (of course, go ahead and point out anyone I'm foolishly overlooking). Since we have a somewhat larger sample size now, I'm going to start arranging players within tiers from left to right (so Young #2 overall, Ayton #3, etc).

Tier 1: Doncic

Tier 2: Young/Ayton/Jackson

Tier 3: Porter/Bamba/Bagley

Tier 4: Carter/Mikal Bridges/Miles Bridges/Bonga/Sexton

I'll give my tier-based rankings another whirl (first edition below for anyone curious):

Tier 1: Doncic

Tier 2: Ayton/Jackson/Young

Tier 3: Bamba/Porter/Bagley

Tier 4: Sexton/Carter/Bridges/Bridges/Bonga

Thought hard about whether or not to include Bonga in that fourth tier, and ultimately decided to go for it. He's arguably a superior prospect to Ntilikina, who went #8 overall last year, and Ntilikina increasingly looks like a solid investment by the Knicks.

Who would you move, and who am I missing in Tier 4? There's at least a half dozen players who could make solid cases. This is starting to look like a pretty deep draft.
