Read the Spurs forums and a lot think Kawhi Wants out. He’s medically cleared to play but claims he still has pain. Doctors can’t find out what the problem is.

If true, and he pulls a Kyrie, you think Spurs would trade him? If that actually ends up happening...let’s hope The Spurs love Cedi as much as they did this past summer...along with the Nets Pick and Kev :chuckle:

I doubt any of this happens but I agree we should do whatever it takes to get him, just to keep him away from Boston...
I’m not including Love in this deal, he’s the perfect compliment to go with Bron and Kawhi . BKN / Cedi and anyone else besides Nance .

Me
Bron
Kawhi
Love
Nance would face stomp the NBA the next 3 years

That would be awesome, but irrealistic. Boston, for example, can offer a much better package if they tend to include Tatum/Brown and picks. As much as the Spurs may like Cedi he's not on the same level as those 2 in Boston.

Love would have to be included in the deal. And even then I guess the Spurs wouldn't need Love if they try to rebuild.

Salary wise it’s pretty easy to make work. Kawhis extension was signed right before the huge 2016 bump so his cap number this year is only 18.8M

Spurs love international players. You give them the Nets pick, Cedi, Zicic and JR for salary match purposes and fits cap wise, provided you do the deal prior to signing the pick(so that his cap number is zero)

You could conceivably do the deal on draft night after the selection is made, if things advance that quickly on the Spurs/Kawhi end of things rift wise.

I personally see Ainge holding onto his chips for AD. But you never know. Obviously the temptation of a Kyrie, Kawhi, Hayward, and Horford core would be huge

If the Spurs move on from Kawhi , I’d imagine they be looking to move Aldridge as well , he could be useful for a year on his expiring . Not sure what type of deal I’d offer them or even if he’s a fit . Bkn pic / Love / Nance / Hood would be off the table .

If the Spurs decide to move on, and that's a big fucking if, this would probably not be a bad year for them to do it, considering the quality of the draft. It would be the most Spurs move ever to transition onto a new player in a stacked draft like this where they initially didn't have a lottery pick on hand.

That said, I still think it's a long shot. Kawhi when healthy is a rock solid top 5 player in the league, they would have to be extremely high on one of the lottery picks to even consider making a move. The question is, is there any player in the lottery who, in the hands of the current Spurs organization could turn into an equally great player as Kawhi, which I think is a huge fucking gamble.

If you're looking at guys that fit the Spurs profile of high character/low ego players with defensive potential you'd probably have to cut out Ayton and Bagley to begin with. Doncic checks a lot of boxes but I wonder if his defensive question marks are too severe for SAS to hitch their wagon to him. Bamba is the exact opposite where his defensive potential is a plus but his waning effort level and focus is a huge red flag. Then you have Porter who has so many question marks at this point in time that it's hard to guage where he will fall at all right now.

The only guy I can think of who really fits the bill is Jackson, but even I have to wonder if it's feasible that he turns into a top 5 player in the same way Kawhi did. It just seems like too big of a risk for an organization like the Spurs at this point, honestly.

I think the understood premise is that it would be more of Kawhi moving on from the Spurs, either in Kyrie fashion or in a more behind the scenes collaborative effort.

It would require Kawhi to either flat out demand to be traded or to tell them he has little to zero interest of re-signing and plans on opting out and leaving in 2019.

Would/will he do that? Is their real friction with him and the organization? Can Pop/Buford smooth that over? Those are questions we don’t know the answer to yet.

But I agree with you, I don’t see the Spurs being the ones to proactively choose to move on from Kawhi. This would require some legit pressure from Kawhi and his agent to go to the next level.

So, Kawhi is cleared medically but is refusing to go back in...sounds like he does not trust their medical team at least.

Furthermore, he fired his agent and hired his uncle to represent him. (Now I’m getting flashes of how Kyrie and his daddy were a headache for the organization. Family representation is never a good idea.)

Both of those factors sound good if you want a rift built between the Spurs(Pop) and Kawhi.

While I agree that it is a positive sign, we just ended a relationship with a young star player with a volative family member, so we should probably do our due diligence before we hitch our wagons to the Kawhi Karavan.

Bruh, it’s Kawhi. He is the closet thing to LeBron in this league as far as impact. You put up with his uncle, aunt, grandpa, cousin Roni, and whoever else he wants to bring to Cleveland.

Cleveland, the Cavs, and Dan Gilbert are the perfect match for the family drama that comes from teams catering to super starts.

I'm with you I fucking love Kawhi, but let's not act like there isn't a situation where Kawhi coming in with a suspect injury and a malcontent family relative and that fucks up our chemistry/championship opportunity.

I'm not saying I'm against getting Kawhi if he becomes available, I'm just saying that we have just experienced first hand the consequences of a lot of the problems Kawhi could potentially bring with him, and we'd be foolish not to take it into consideration when making the move.

But I was told this could never happen! Check the CBA! The Spurs obviously just need to petition for an independent doctor to tell the league and Kawhi that he’s fine, and then force him to play or suspend him! Easy peasy, right? A player definitely can’t disagree with multiple team doctors and refuse to play....right?

It was tough for me until the thought of Kyrie/Gordon/Kawhi crossed my mind.
I don't see Ainge pursuing Kawhi. As others have said, I think he's either resigned to waiting out LeBron/the Warriors or making a power move for AD.

I'd almost do anything if it meant landing Kawhi, but I'd hate to part with Love. I'd be adamant that dumping a bad contract is a stipulation that comes with trading the BKN pick.

I'd offer the Spurs:

BKN
Cedi
TT

...and if they wanted Zizic as a sweetener, so be it. But anything else and I'm just not sure it's worth sacrificing the superstar upside of some of these draft guys, several of which would suit our team like a glove.

Now we know why Lebron is gushing so much about Cedi.... He has Pop foaming at the mouth lol.

So whats the trade look like on that? Nets pick + Love + Cedi? He only has one year left on his contract after the year but he is probably the 3rd best player when healthy.

No way they get Love... TT JR but not Love...

Hill Hood Kawhi LBJ Love... Game over
