Trade the 8th pick? Where? Why? How?

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
All Charlotte got back was two future second round picks? I don’t really get the move for Charlotte. They save a few million next year, yes, but still have to pay $16+ million to Mozgov in 2019-2020... Dwight was an expiring contract. So they don’t really save money, they actually take on more and only get 2 2nd rounders?

Kind of confused by that.

Looks like a missed opportunity to me....Tristan makes similar money to Mozgov and same amount of years.

Feels like we should've been able to get some type of package deal with Dwight/Kemba and even included Tristan as an outgoing piece.

That deal was terrible for Charlotte....like awful. To take on a second year of Mozgov when Dwight expires after the season...?!???!?? It's shockingly bad.

I kinda think this may make a Kemba trade less likely?

The only reason we'd even theoretically be able to get Kemba would be our willingness to take on a bad contract like Batum or Williams. That's a horrible position for the Hornets to be in. By trading Dwight and getting them out of the luxury tax this coming year, they may have just saved themselves from having to tie Kemba to a bad contract. Doesn't mean they still wouldn't trade him, but could potentially get better value for him now.

Anyone else have this thought?

Lets also not discount this:

Zach Lowe (@ZachLowe_NBA)

Moving Dwight means getting rid of a big headache. Could fix some issues in the locker room.

You might be right. Alot of us here have seen giving up #8 and taking Batum as too much for Kemba. Maybe the Cavs refuse to put anything like that on the table. They might be getting offers of much later picks for that package.

For all we know the Cavs might be putting a #8+JR for Kemba or #8+Hill for Kemba and Marvin Williams on the table.

For the Hornets it might be they rather eat salary and get value than just get a middle to late first round pick for Kemba.

I wonder if they have a landing spot for Batum....I just don't see them eating Mozgov's second year without also getting rid of Batum's contract.

The Mozgov deal might not be so bad if it's in orchestration with additional moves.

That's my hope anyways.

I could see Charlotte taking back Mozgov, in what is essentially a 3 way deal...

Where Cavs absorb Batum's deal ($24M this year, $25.5M next year, $27M 2020/2021 season). Obviously Kemba comes attached with Batum. Hornets take on Hill and JR Smith's expiring deals. Hornets get out of luxury tax for this season, and avoid it going forward by moving Batum, and not re-signing Kemba. I just wonder if that deal is possible without the #8 pick. If it is......I think Cavs are obligated to do it. Love and the #8 pick can bring back a superstar level player. Until now, I didn't think you could get Batum and Kemba without the #8 pick....I'm reconsidering now. MJ seems desperate to shed salary.

It was clearly a move to make more moves this offseason. I would think it means Kemba is out the door for sure now, but to whom? By freeing up some money this year, they are probably looking for another pick with a contract attached to it.

Example being we could technically deal for Kemba without having to take on Batum as Charlotte is now $13 mil short of the tax. So they could take on Clarkson or JR with the #8 picks contract and still be short of the tax.

Two second round picks is probably appropriate compensation for Dwight. Cavs don't have two second rounders to give. We saw few rentals get moved last trade deadline, they had the chance to get value and took it.

The idea of use it or lose it in terms of cap space also can be used for a tanking team. Dwight was their only expiring they have currently. Taking on Mozgov could net them more assets next summer. Letting Dwight expiring didn't help them in the free agency market and if they move Kemba, they had no recruiting power. Unless you can clear a ton of cap space to take on contracts as a tanking team, keeping your salary cap number high and moving expirings for two year contracts to get assets, isn't a bad strategy.

How about this deal?

To Cavs: Walker, Batum, #11 pick
To Hornets: Hill, Smith, #8 pick

Batum’s contract is pretty awful, so I’m not even sure that the Cavs would so this.

If you want to take on batum, I guess that would work. But I think with the Mozgov acquisition, it points to Charlotte wanting to take on money for the next 2 years if it means acquiring picks. I doubt they would be willing to deal their own pick in any circumstance now.

We will know a lot after the draft tomorrow. If the Cavs go with a PG, there is a much greater chance that pick will be dealt, especially if a deal with Kemba is on the table as it gives Charlotte the PG replacement they need. If we go Porter Jr, not so much in my opinion, unless one of SGA, Young or Sexton falls to #11.

Ideal scenario would be 2 of SGA, Young, and Sexton are still there at 8. Then have a bidding war between Toronto and Charlotte. This is assuming the Cavs have a feeling LeBron could stay and Kawhi has no chance of being traded here.

At least we know Kemba could be had.

Wish we could find a way to get that #4 pick from Memphis without giving up #8. We could send the #4 + whatever to San Antonio, then the #8 + whatever to Charlotte for Kemba. I would take both Parsons and Batum as spacers back too.

Kemba + Kawhi would be an immensely successful off-season and keeps LeBron here imo.

Unless the Hornets fall in love with a guy they don't think will be there at 11, I just don't see them wanting to do this.

I've tried to think about trade down scenarios for the Cavs to get a appropriate pick to give if we take on Batum. Clippers trade down for #12 and 13 has been floated, I would be down for that.

I also think Denver could give up Millsap+#14 for #8. The question with that is what players they would be willing to take back so that we can also take on Kemba and Batum with #14. This would also free us up to move Love.

I'll be sick if the Cavs move this pick for anyone not on the All-NBA lists. We NEED young players. LeBron is gone.

There’s rumors they want SGA, but he may not be there at #11.

Id be surprised if they did it. I would think they would want us to take on even more salary than just Batum in that trade. Might have to take on MKG which I think would hurt or Marvin Williams which I wouldn't mind, then add Korver to the deal. I'd do it though because #11 could net us another piece or upgrade over Love.
