Cavs Pre-Season Game Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
The Gonzaga Nembhard isn't related to RJ. Andrew is a Canadian.
Oh, my bad. I figured they were related as there aren’t a lot of hoopers with that last name.

Oh I thought so as well. I just looked it up. Saw Andrew was Canadian and his only brother was named Ryan. Could be distant cousins or something. Because Nembhard doesn't seem like a common name on or off the court.

That was pretty fun. I think the defense is legit. Probably won't keep teams to 42 in a half, but that was cool.

When the team played good D last year they were in it and not the rest of the the time, really.

Tacko seems playable during injury just as a guy who can protect the rim. They will try to run on you, but so what.

Pangos can run the offense. I hope he can actually hit some shots

Kyle Guy seems kinda cool. I am intrigued. Supposedly he can shoot? He seems to understand the game, but is a bad athlete.

Justin Jame would be interesting as a rook. He can accelerate really fast. He just ran faster than everyone at one point. I though he had good defensive awareness and he is very light on his feet.

Ballock this guy is like a maniac. Is that how he really plays? He is a brutalist. Delly if he was a hit to hit any 3 with a lightning release. If he can really shoot like that, they need to throw a 2 way his way. Cut Ed Davis for Ballock.

Glad they cut Kabengele and Thomas. Some of these other guys look better.

I would cut Valentine and Pangos, sign Baldcock and Guy as replacements then sign Nembhard and James to two-way contracts. But I think Pangos has fully guaranteed, maybe should have tested him out before doing that

Baldcock and Guy? Nembhard? Are these cavs players or the name of the 3 guys that start in the porno that @The Oi rented last night?

Just got a chance to watch most of the first half this morning. At least up until JBB emptied the bench.

First thought is that I really wish JBB let Okoro play some more minutes yesterday. He got off to a nice start and if he could've gotten. A chance to keep it rolling, that would've helped his confidence immensely heading into the season. Plus I think that of all the rotation guys on the roster, he benefits the most from logging minutes.

Second, I liked Garland's all-around floor game yesterday a lot. I just wish he'd stop starting every fucking game with two or three turnovers on sloppy nonchalant passes. Hopefully he was only doing that shit because it was preseason.

Finally, I love watching Mobley get switched out onto the perimeter so often in these exhibition games -- he's getting a lot of practice out there. Pretty soon these guards are gonna stop thinking they can easily blow right by him.

Bonus thought: might Kevin Love help us win games this year? I've been very pleasantly surprised with what I've seen. Happy for him after that Team USA shit show.

Team looks pretty strong. I think they will win some games. Strong bench is going to do wonders

What I think I learned:

1. That 3-2 zone defense with Mobley at the top of the key looks pretty good. Markkanen and Allen down low, Mobley at the top of the key and the guards on the wings was pretty effective against the Pacers' starters. Maybe after teams get some film and can game plan it won't be that great, but it looked good last night.

2. Cedi Osman is refusing to go away quietly. 14 points, 3 bounds, and 2 assists in 15 minutes. His 3-point shot looked great; he was 4-for-7. In four preseason games Cedi is hitting an insane 46.7% on 3's and 53.8% overall. His 3-point shot looks much improved over last season when he only hit 30%. I thought that with Windler healthy and possibly Markkanen playing some minutes at the 3 Cedi would be out of the rotation completely. He's refusing to cooperate.

3. Love chipped in with 10 points in 10 minutes and a +7, mostly against their starters. He's also refusing to go away quietly.

4. Dean Wade is a solid reserve but I don't see how he gets any significant minutes.

5. The big lineup of Allen, Mobley and Marky plus Okoro at the 2 and Garland at the 1 gave the Pacers' starters all kinds of problems.

6. As for the tryout guys, I liked Nembhard and Ballock. Nembhard is very quick and athletic and had a nice game against the Pacers' backups with 9 pts, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, and a steal in 19 minutes. The guy is 6'5" and has NBA athleticism from what I could see. I don't know how he's been doing in practices and scrimmages but he looked like decent project to me. He's 22.

Ballock displayed a very quick release on his 3-point shots and knocked down 3-of-5. He had 12 points in 16 minutes along with three boards. He's also 6'5" and we could use some taller guys who can hit from deep. Ballock is already 23 so I don't know if he has an NBA future but I could definitely see him in the G League along with Nembhard.

For the entire five-game preseason, what I really liked was the efficiency of the 3-point shooting. Here are the percentages for the guys who will be getting minutes: Markky 46.7%, Sexton 40%, Garland 35.3%, Love 43.8%, Cedi 46.7%, Wade 40%, Windler 50%. The only guys not shooting the 3 well are Okoro (2-for-7) and Rubio (2-for-11). But those last two won't be taking three's except with an expiring shot clock and no other options.

I also liked the option of going with a big lineup, which very few, if any, teams use. It's going to cause some problems.

Rubio had 26 assists in 82 minutes. Second highest was Garland with 16 assists in 95 minutes. Rubio is amazing at getting the ball to shooters in position for a good shot, if not a layup or dunk.

Finally, this team is deeper than maybe any Cavs team I've ever seen with Love, Cedi, Windler, Markkanen, and Rubio coming off the bench, assuming a starting lineup of Allen, Mobley, Okoro, Sexton, and Garland. Guys who got a lot of second team minutes last year like Wade and Stevens don't look to be in the mix.

I'm pretty geeked to watch this team. There are a number of lineups they can use depending on the opponent. I think the second unit is going to outperform most other teams' second units.

it's pronounced Baldcock

One thing I'm not crazy about was the turnovers; Sexton had 15 (3 games) and Garland 14 (4 games). Sexton shot 34.1% from the field, but I'm not worried about that.

Mobley led the team in blocked shots with 8 (the next highest, Allen, had 3). Mobley was tied for second in steals and led the team in rebounding. Between blocks, altered shots, steals, and defensive boards, Mobley is going to be huge in preventing opponents from scoring and getting second shots.

I had a feeling Cedi was going to have a bit of a bounce back season with better PG play. The addition of Rubio is going to especially make a huge difference for the bench players. I still prefer to see Windler in the rotation assuming he's healthy of course.

My other takeaway is the guards need to stop turning the ball over esp at the beginning of games. It's tough enough for young teams to win but the turnovers are a real killer.
