Cavs Pre-Season Game Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
waiving Ballock wtf is with this org when it comes to seeing and not seeing skill? Besides that Valentine has looked cooked all preseason and hopefully with any luck they realize that soon enough and dump him before Ballock gets a call from a better run front office.

Yeah Valentine looks like he could be done. He wasn't an athlete coming into the league and the ankle surgeries didn't do him any favors either.

The Pacers started McConnell, Duarte, and Craig. That’s definitely nothing special. I’m not gonna give credit to the zone in such a small shitty sample when it was trash whenever we used it last year. Going zone when you have more length of course makes more sense on paper, but I like Mobley as a rim protector better than trying to alter passes/shots on the perimeter. That’s what our smaller faster guys are supposed to do (key word: supposed). Zone doesn’t work in the nba anyway. Puts you in scramble mode right off the bat. Open shots can be had pretty much at will.

No Malcolm Brogdon or Jeremy Lamb, so yeah, you have a point. We'll see how much JBB decides to go zone this year.

If we're being honest, Mobley looked bad in the last preseason game. Nothing to be alarmed about, of course - he just doesn't know how to play NBA basketball yet. The whole season will probably be a roller coaster ride.

However, it's a fact that offensively, he's something of an awkward tweener right now who won't help us win many games. To me it's clear as day that he's a 5 in the modern NBA, but he has a long way to go until he can play that position effectively as a starter. On BOTH sides of the ball.

That's not a problem – it's something you expect with a guy like him. The NBA is a tough environment for young bigs, particularly finesse guys.

What IS a problem is that he most definitely can't play the 4 either in his current form, not if we're trying to win. Forget the gym videos, Mobley does not have a functional NBA 3pt shot at this point.

I'd like to start him but I'm afraid it just won't work. He'll keep drifting to the middle since he's most comfortable there, but we all know that Allen's defender is a permanent resident of the paint. We can't play two non-shooting centers at the same time.

Baldcock seemed a bit stiff out there. He had short bursts of quickness and seemed to be a dead eye shooter. There is just something about him that has me excited. Not sure if he makes the team but h e wont go down easy.

Also seemed good at calming down the other guys and not letting things get too hairy out there.

I don’t get the Pangos signing at all. Why did we give him guaranteed money? He’s awful! Weren’t we just bidding against ourselves?

I wouldn't sweat it all that much. I think we still have enough wiggle room under the tax apron, according to Spotrac, where we could waive him and sign someone like Exum if we really wanted to go down that route.

I'm sure that if Pangos was willing to sign a non-guaranteed camp invite, we wouldn't have given him a guaranteed contract. Maybe he was content staying in Europe unless we paid him what we did?

If a guaranteed contract to Pangos ends up being of any significant consequence to us this year, then we were probably fucked already.

We were bidding against European teams. Likely had to give him 1 year of guaranteed money since he was turning down big overseas offers. Also had Raptors and Grizzlies showing interest. But why does it matter? It's 1 year 1.7 M. Can easily cut him at some point to clear a spot if they like someone enough.
