What are the chances the Cavs land either Jamison, West, or Miller at the trade deadline?
John Hollinger (12:09 PM)

No shot at West. They have a better shot at Jamison or Miller, but the issue for Cavs is that the can't offer any lux tax relief this season so they might need to set up a 3-way -- clubs with trade exceptions or cap room have a leg up on Cavs in this one.

I'm too lazy to look it up, but I'm pretty sure only like 2-3 teams are under the cap and two of them are OKC and Portland - neither would want Jamison and probably not Murphy either.

I agree with the comment about West though.

who is Miller?

Both our prospects (AJ and TM) had a great stat line last night. I liked Troy's rebounding prowess, length, and age better than Jamison's package, though.

There's probably absolutely no chance at David West anymore. Even though it's pretty close between Jamison and West on this poll, I think Jamison is probably going to be the best player available via trade this year. Unless the Raptors are serious about moving Chris Bosh, but we probably wouldn't have a shot in hell at him anyways.

I believe in some kind of 3/4 way trade we can get Bosh (with some luck in form of others GM cooperating). But with only our current assets, no chance at all.

Oh god. Don't make me do it. Fuck it.

I see your Jamison and David West and laugh in your faces.

NBA notes: Cavs looking West?

By Bob Finnan
RFinnan@News-Herald.com

Much of the talk around the league has been centered on the Cavaliers' quest to acquire Wizards forward Antawn Jamison.

That rumor has died down in the last week.

Expect it to be rekindled near the Feb. 18 deadline.

A league source said the Cavs have also made a run at Hornets power forward David West.

The Cavs are dangling center Zydrunas Ilgauskas out there for the Hornets, who want to avoid paying the luxury tax at all cost.

The Hornets could buy out Ilgauskas' contract and waive him. Then he could return to the Cavs in 30 days.

Or they could hang onto him and let his $11.5 million deal expire after this season.

If the Cavs got West, perhaps it wouldn't be a high priority to get Ilgauskas back in a month. Anderson Varejao could play many of the backup minutes behind center Shaquille O'Neal like he does now.

However, Hornets coach/GM Jeff Bower told New Orleans writers he has no intention of breaking up their core to get under the luxury-tax threshold. Teams are also inquiring about point guard Chris Paul.

"The foundation of our plan has always been to maintain our core group of players and to look at ways that wouldn't affect our overall basketball team on the court," Bower said.

Having Ilgauskas play for another team might be a little strange for Cavs fans and the Lithuanian center.

It was reported earlier in the season the Cavs made an attempt to pry Troy Murphy loose from the Pacers. The league source said the Cavs also tried to get Jeff Foster:rolleyes:.

Many observers expect the Pacers to make some kind of deal before the trade deadline.

West, who played collegiately at Xavier, is a 6-foot-9, 240-pounder who can score from the perimeter. He's also a good rebounder and superb foul shooter.

He's averaged 16.5 points and 7.2 rebounds and is shooting 84 percent from the foul line and 48 percent from the field in his career. West, 29, is a two-time All-Star.

The Hornets are headed for the playoffs this year, but likely won't get out of the first round — with or without West.

He makes $9.1 million this season and will earn $8.3 million next year. He owns a player option on his 2011-12 contract worth $7.5 million.

Going outside the title a little bit - I still think we should make a play for Iggy+Brand: A trade similar to the following works:

Cavs Get:
Andre Iguodala
Elton Brand
Royal Ivey

Philadelphia Gets:
Z (buyout)
West (possible buyout)
Moon
JJ
Gibson

We can also throw in Wally instead of West if they don't want to buyout West (since I'd like to see him back, and I don't think many teams want him with the legal troubles).

Reasons to make the deal:

1.) Brand, though overpriced, is as good as Jamison - He's really beginning to show it the last few weeks (despite the philly offense not fitting his game at all). He's only shooting .02 worse than Jamison on jump shots (.426 vs. .443 TS%). He's a much better defender. He's three years younger. He's a better matchup for some of the big PFs we're going to face come playoff time. As a team expecting to spend way over the salary cap, we can afford to have one bad contract on the team for awhile - especially one who's size and shooting ability mean he will never be a subpar player.

2.) Iggy is a perfect #2 for LBJ - For reasons listed earlier. He's effective without the ball in his hands. He's a lockdown defender and great passer. His (and LBJ's) jumpshot is improving. Now that we have Williams, we'll never have the same problems that we had with Snow+James+Hughes. He's only 25. LBJ+Iggy+Mo+AV is probably the best young core in the league.

3.) We can't trust Delonte as a center piece this year - this isn't just about his stability. He WILL be suspended for 20+ games at some point this year. What happens if that strikes us at a bad time? Especially with Stern's desire to step up his punishments for gun crimes after the Arenas situation.

4.) We pay a little more next year, but we can bring the same core back next year and save money. Resigning Shaq at around $10/million per year and Z around the MLE will save us millions next year. And we'll still have an amazing team.

5.) Though it looks like we're trading a lot. We're really only sending out players we've been looking to deal anyway (Z, Hickson, West) and two guys who aren't getting any minutes (Gibson, Moon). Even if we don't get people back after buyouts (worst case scenario) - The players we bring in can still play the minutes of the guys we're letting go.

6.) This years playoffs (assuming buyouts (or a wally trade instead of West)):

PG - Williams (35), West (13)
SG - Iggy (30), West (18), Parker ?
SF - LBJ (40), Iggy (8)
PF - Brand (25), AV (23)
C - Shaq (25), Z(20), AV (3)

That's the best team in the league.

Jamison -- because he has proven a number of times he can be the first option, second option, or third option. And he doesnt care what option he is.

I don't want to hijack this thread but I have to wonder if we'll end up with any of these guys, either because we don't have enough assets or we don't want to give up that much for one of these guys. So.....what are some other options Cavs might have available? Are there any "second tier" options out there that aren't really being discussed?

At PF? I don't think there is anyone else really. We don't need any 4, we need a stretch 4 which is pretty restricting. Basically the only stretch 4s that are possibly available have already been connected with the Cavs. I guess one exception to that would be AK47...but that's about it.

They are supposedly looking at SG options, but Rip & Tay are the only players that have been mentioned there (I think). So if the "big trade" they make is for a SG, it'll probably be a name you wouldn't expect (at least not right now).

Of course trading for a SG wouldn't solve our problems but I guess that's a discussion for another thread/time.
