Z's return Countdown (Officially back on the roster)

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Re: Z's return Countdown (Z likely to sign Tues morning)

Z time getting nearer: He could practice as early as today

INDEPENDENCE — Zydrunas Ilgauskas could be at practice today at Cleveland Clinic Courts and on the team plane later in the afternoon when the Cavaliers depart for a game in New Orleans on Wednesday.

Ilgauskas, traded from Cleveland to Washington on Feb. 17 in the three-team deal that brought Antawn Jamison and Sebastian Telfair to the Cavaliers, was close to agreeing to terms with the team Monday night.

There wasn’t much for agent Herb Rudoy and Cavaliers general manager Danny Ferry to negotiate, as the team will likely give Ilgauskas most or all of the $1.99 million biannual exception.

The biannual is for two years, but the second year can be a team or player option, with that option likely to go in Ilgauskas’ favor.

That would allow the 7-foot-3 center to become an unrestricted free agent in the summer, but he could still re-sign again with the Cavaliers at that time, probably for a larger chunk of the mid-level exception.

There’s also the possibility Ilgauskas could retire at the end of the season, an option that might become more likely if the Cavaliers win the first NBA championship in franchise history.

Ilgauskas could have signed with any other team immediately after being bought out of his expiring contract by the Wizards and clearing waivers, but he instructed Rudoy to open negotiations with the Cavaliers at the earliest moment.

Players must wait 30 days before re-signing with their former team after being traded, making Monday the first day Ilgauskas and the Cavaliers could talk contract.

“He’s a big friend of mine, one of the best friends I have,” Cavaliers small forward LeBron James said Sunday following a win over the Detroit Pistons. “I’m excited. He’s had a lot of rest. I’m looking forward to it.”

When Ilgauskas’ signing becomes official, the Cavaliers will have to create a roster spot, with rookie guard Danny Green or second-year big man Darnell Jackson the most likely player to be waived.

Cleveland could also part with Telfair, but his $2.5 million contract for this season would mean eating substantially more money than releasing Green or Jackson.

Even with starting center Shaquille O’Neal out with a thumb injury, Ilgauskas will likely come off the bench for the Cavaliers, as he did in 47 of the 53 games he appeared in prior to being traded.

J.J. Hickson is playing well as the team’s starting center — Cleveland (56-15) has won seven straight games and 13 of its last 14 — and it’s doubtful coach Mike Brown will change his starting lineup.

Given that the 7-1, 325-pound O’Neal will assume the starting spot when he returns, it makes even more sense to use Ilgauskas off the bench now, as that will also be his role in the playoffs.

The 34-year-old Ilgauskas, the franchise’s all-time leader in games played, rebounds and blocks in addition to being one of the team’s most popular and respected players, averaged 7.5 points on .452 shooting and 5.3 rebounds in 20½ minutes a night prior to the trade.

Brown will have to make some difficult decisions with Ilgauskas back — and even more when O’Neal returns — but having so many talented big men is a pleasant problem to have.

It’s hard to consistently use more than four players at the power forward and center spots, and three usually get the majority of the minutes. When everyone is healthy, those three will almost certainly be O’Neal, Jamison and Anderson Varejao.

Ilgauskas, Hickson and Leon Powe, who had a season-high 16 points on Sunday, have all shown they deserve time, but at least two will be doing a lot of sitting if, as expected, the Cavaliers are playing late in the postseason.

Until O’Neal returns, which probably won’t be until the playoffs, divvying up playing time will be a bit less of a problem, but Cleveland players don’t seem overly worried about who plays how many minutes.

“We’re a team,” Powe said. “We’re a family.”

The PD article:

Zydrunas Ilgauskas to sign 1-year deal with Cleveland Cavaliers this morning
By Mary Schmitt Boyer, The Plain Dealer

CLEVELAND -- Zydrunas Ilgauskas, the Cavaliers beloved center, will sign a one-year deal to return to the team this morning sources told The Plain Dealer, and presumably will be available to play when the team travels to New Orleans for a game on Wednesday.

Ilgauskas, the team's all-time leader in games played, rebounds and blocked shots, was traded to Washington on Feb. 17 in the deals that brought Antawn Jamison and Sebastian Telfair to the Cavs. He was bought out by the Wizards and became a free agent. Monday was the first day the Cavs could offer him a contract.

Ilgauskas was courted by teams like Dallas and Denver, but instructed his agent, Herb Rudoy, to announce his intentions to return to the Cavs, in part because of the outpouring of support he received from fans upon his departure.

He will be paid about $150,000 for the remainder of the season, the pro-rated amount of the 10-year veteran's minimum.

The Cavs will have to clear a roster spot to sign Ilgauskas. Likely candidates to be cut include Darnell Jackson and rookie Danny Green, who do not have guaranteed contracts for next season. Telfair has a guaranteed contract and also is hurt, which makes it less likely he'd be cut.

Re: Z's return Countdown (Z to sign Tues morning)

I know there were only two options - but do you think that Z requested the 1 year deal or was refused the bi-annual? I'd imagine that Ferry said here are our options - it's your call big fella - no way he would have played hardball right?

Re: Z's return Countdown (Z to sign Tues morning)

Pip just cut himself from the Cavs...:chuckles:

Z has made his money. Hundred Million in the bank. Z might of been a company guy and said," You know Danny, I'll leave the bi-annual for next season to help us aquire more talent. I'll take the minimum. "

Z was offered and refused the 2 year bi-annual and took the remainder of the season option at vet minimum.

Re: Z's return Countdown (Z to sign Tues morning)

Rudoy said last night that Z was choosing between different options. This choice leaves Z plenty of options for next year (retire, get paid by the Cavs at different levels, sign a 1-year or longer deal, become a free agent, etc.).

Re: Z's return Countdown

You do realize that the Indians signed Kenny Lofton as a free agent the summer after they traded him to Atlanta, right?

He then left via free agency in '02. So, it was his choice to leave.

I will repeat what I originally said in this thread. There is a big difference between Kenny’s situation and Z’s.

I’m not sure how old you are, or where you were back in 1997. But at the time, I was 26 years old, living in Cleveland, and I remember it like it was yesterday. Kenny had no idea he was going to get traded to the Braves. He was shocked and very disappointed. He had no idea that the Indians were going to resign him in 1998. And after he was traded, he was disrespected by a few of the Braves players. Just a very bad situation for Kenny. He signed a 1 year contract for a little over $1 million with the White Sox in 2002 because the Indians showed no interest in him. This was the year that Shapiro really cleaned house.

Z on the other hand was somehow made aware that his contract could be a huge piece for a trade in February, only if the trade brought back a special player. The Cavs also made it known that they intended to bring Z back as soon as they possibly could, as mentioned by W&G in this tread:
http://www.realcavsfans.com/showthread.php?p=578013#post578013

The one negative with Z’s trade was the possibility that Washington wouldn’t buy him out.

It's great to see that Z's officially back with the Cavs. I plan on being at the first home game of Z’s return at the Q. I was also at the first home game of Kenny’s return at Progressive Field. And just like I gave Kenny a standing O, I will give Z a standing O. And as I originally said in this thread, Z’s standing O will not overshadow Kenny’s. And likewise, nothing will ever overshadow the standing O that Z is about to get.

Re: Z's return Countdown (Z to sign Tues morning)

About time, Nike can finally bring Z back in those puppet commercials!

Re: Z's return Countdown (Z to sign Tues morning)

Z was offered and refused the 2 year bi-annual and took the remainder of the season option at vet minimum.
so....if we re-sign him in the off-season it will likely be for the MLE. Oh well, it's good to have him back:thumbup:
