Re: Z's return Countdown (Z to sign Tues morning)

I want to see Z do the Goosie. That is going to be hilarious.

Re: Z's return Countdown (Z to sign Tues morning)

About time, Nike can finally bring Z back in those puppet commercials!

I'd like to see the cavs play the commercial at the game sunday.

Re: Z's return Countdown (Z to sign Tues morning)

For those wondering why the vet min instead of slightly more bae I will explain. Z was given 2 options. This year and next at the bae or vet min. The difference would be probably about 100k or so not huge amounts to what Z has already made. But this is not about Z giving us a hometown discount. This is about Ferry wanting to keep the bae for next year if Z doesnt want it at this time. If we used the bae on Z, even for just one year, we wouldnt have it next summer. Thus I am 100% sure Ferry wouldnt allow Z to return on the bae if he doesnt want to sign on for next year.

So what does this mean for Z this summer? This means he will have 3 options. Retire, stay with cleveland or sign as a free agent elsewhere.

What can we offer if he stays? If he stays we have 3 options. Vet min. Full Bae for 1 or 2 years. Full or partial mle for 1-5 years.

What will most likely happen? I am guessing Z will resign for a portion of the mle after Ferry is done shopping around and having our options limmited. Z wont be quick to resign here or anywhere else as he will let his options unfold. Personally I dont think Z has any intention on signing for another club at this point. He will look at either returning to the cavs or retiring depending on how the playoffs go and how he feels come the offseason.

Re: Z's return Countdown (Z to sign Tues morning)

I can live with this cause it gives me hope that he isn't here next season...

Multi year contract would have been a kill shot... But this is workable..

Re: Z's return Countdown (Z to sign Tues morning)

If Z wants to return for one more season, he could also sign a 2 year BAE contract this summer and retire in 2011. That way Z makes more than the BAE and the Cavs can use their MLE on another player in FA if they wish. I believe this is how Ferry ended his playing career in San Antonio before he joined their front office.

Little known fact: Ferry actually ended his career as a member of the Indiana Pacers.

Technically, but he never played a game for them. Nick Anderson did the same thing for the Cavaliers but nobody counts that either.

Re: Z's return Countdown (Z to sign Tues morning)

This was a very strategic move by both Z and Ferry. Our MLE next offseason will be huge if we win a championship and it could be used on a variety of players (as outlined in this thread http://www.realcavsfans.com/showthread.php?t=29073 ). I bet that Z and Ferry alike are waiting to see what player becomes available to us for the full MLE. If it is a special player like Ron Artest to the Lakers than i am pretty sure that Z would sign a 2 year deal for the BAE instead of a deal for a partial MLE. This way it allows Z to still be on the roster next season and the season after that, but he doesn't have to play the second season of the contract. It is another loop hole that the Cavs can use to make our team better.

I'm confused a bit here... George Thomas is wrong in saying that we used the BAE, correct?

The Cleveland Cavaliers completed a deal with center Zydrunas Ilgauskas to bring him back to the team for the remainder of the season.

The deal is just for the rest of the year and uses a pro-rated portion of the bi-annual exception. Ilgauskas will be able to test the free agent market next season.

‘’He came back to win a championship,’’ agent Herb Rudoy said.

How about the Elyria Chronicle?

http://chronicle.northcoastnow.com/2010/03/23/cavs-z-reach-deal-15-million-for-rest-of-season/

The Cleveland Cavaliers and Zydrunas Ilgauskas have reached a deal.

According to Ilgauskas’ agent, Herb Rudoy, the terms will cover the cost of Ilgauskas’ buyout with the Wizards.

“(Cavs owner) Dan Gilbert has agreed to pay him in full,” Rudoy said. “Z will not lose any money in his buyout.”

It is believed Ilgauskas left $1.5 million on the table when he was bought out by the Wizards.

It was not immediately known how soon Ilgauskas will be practicing or back in uniform for the Cavs.

One thing to consider is there is playoff bonuses. Each round the team splits the bonus. The team votes on how many "shares" a player gets. They might have Z get more "shares" of the bonus. Considering that the Wizzards were not playoff bound they would get no bonuses.

Here is a breakdown of the bonuses.
Best Record in NBA: $288,421
Best Record in Conference, $252,369 per team
Second Best Record in Conference, $202,842 per team
Third Best Record in Conference, $151,421 per team
Fourth Best Record in Conference, $119,000 per team
Fifth Best record in Conference, $99,158 per team
Sixth Best Record in Conference, $67,632 per team
Playing in the First Round, $149,243 per team
Playing in Conference Semifinals, $177,579 per team
Playing in Conference Finals, $293,447 per team
Losing in the NBA Finals: $1,173,474 per team
Winning the NBA Finals: $1,770,947 per team

So The team could pick up 3 million or so in bonuses. Lets say they give Z a big share of the bonus, which the team is allowed to do. If thats the case that would make up for some of the money he left on the table plus the remaining salary.

CLEVELAND, OH - March 23, 2010 - The Cleveland Cavaliers have signed free agent center Zydrunas Ilgauskas to a contract, Cavaliers General Manager Danny Ferry announced today from Cleveland Clinic Courts. Per team and league policy, terms of the contract were not released.

Ilgauskas has averages of 7.5 points on .452 shooting, 5.3 rebounds and 0.8 blocks in 20.5 minutes per game in 53 games (six starts) this season with Cleveland. He was traded to Washington, where he did not appear in any games, as part of the three-team trade on Feb. 17th in which the Cavaliers acquired forward Antawn Jamison and guard Sebastian Telfair.

“The entire Cleveland Cavaliers organization from our hard-working part-time game day people to our front office, to the coaching staff, players, ownership and everyone else are thrilled that Zydrunas is coming back home to help us with our upcoming playoffs mission and hopefully, beyond. Things didn’t seem quite right around here without the big guy. If there ever was a benchmark to measure what the franchise aspires all of its team members to be, whether they play on the court or off the court, that benchmark would be Zydrunas Ilgauskas. That’s why having “Z” back means so much to the Cavs, the city of Cleveland and the entire state of Ohio,” said Cavaliers majority owner Dan Gilbert.

The two-time all-star is the Cavaliers’ all-time leader in games played (760), rebounds (5,841), blocks (1,259) and minutes played (21,572) while ranking second in points scored (10,540). The native of Lithuania is also the all-time leader in postseason games played (64) and total rebounds (512) while currently placed second in minutes played (1,950) and blocked shots (75). He ranks fifth among all active NBA players in games played with one franchise behind only Kobe Bryant (L.A. Lakers), Tim Duncan (San Antonio), Dirk Nowitzki (Dallas) and Paul Pierce (Boston).

“Having the opportunity to bring Zydrunas back to the Cavaliers is very special for the franchise and our fans. We’re happy and we feel fortunate that Z wants to be here. We’re also very happy for his wife Jennifer and his children too, and we’re excited to see him back on the court with his teammates tomorrow,” said Cavaliers General Manager Danny Ferry.

Ilgauskas, 34, was drafted by the Cavaliers with the 20th overall pick of the 1996 NBA Draft. He missed the entire 1996-97 and 1999-2000 seasons and large portions of the 1998-99 (77 games) and 2000-01 (58 games) seasons due to foot injuries. Since the 2002-03 season, he has played in 587 of a possible 628 regular-season games with Cleveland. He was named an all-star during the 2002-03 and 2004-05 seasons. He has career averages of 13.9 points on .475 shooting, 7.7 rebounds, 1.2 assists and 1.7 blocks in 28.4 minutes per game in 760 games (673 starts).

The Cavaliers have also waived forward Darnell Jackson. “Darnell was a good, hard-working teammate for us. We thank him and wish him the best going forward,” stated Ferry. The second-year forward averaged 0.8 points on .320 shooting and 0.7 rebounds in 4.3 minutes per game in 27 games this season. The Cavaliers roster now stands at 15 players.
