#185 - Caleb Brantley, DT, Florida

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I don't think the woman was the ex girlfriend she was a friend of the Ex girlfriend.

There was no domestic abuse aspect to this case at all

Didn't use those words either. We agree.

Just more proof of just how dumb women are in general.

But in all seriousness....

It doesn't really make much sense to extort the player before they're rich. For the player, even if you settle or it gets dismissed, you're dropping in the draft just due to the implication. Kind of takes away the incentive to settle with the "victim" for money.

"Rich" is relative. Sure, he's not making $5M. But is she can get $50/$100G from him, that's a good night's work.

It surprises me that for a player that has First-Round talent, that teams didn't really vet the police report or independently verify what happened. It doesn't take a lot of looking to see that this was always fishy and that he was not likely to be charged.

As it is, the Browns really, really lucked out here. He was projected as a First-Round talent but likely higher Second-Round pick due to maturity issues like motivation (concerns prior to this incident). After this incident he had better be counting his lucky stars and motivated to work as hard as he can. Between Brantley and Shelton there won't be a lot of open gaps for RBs to hit.

So from a talent perspective the Browns actually acquired four First-Round prospects this draft and the D-Line arguably has four guys with First-Round pedigree in Garrett, Shelton, Brantley and Ogbah.

Apparently the Browns were one of the teams closely looking at the situation shortly before the draft.

A handful of teams are not deterred by a misdemeanor battery complaint against former Florida defensive tackle Caleb Brantley as the 2017 NFL Draft begins on Thursday night.

According to Jason Cole of Bleacher Report, the Cleveland Browns, Green Bay Packers, Los Angeles Rams, Denver Broncos and Washington Redskins “have shown the most interest/done most work in the past two days” regarding Brantley.

Will Brantley be starting by the end of the season? @AZ_ @The Wizard of Moz

Is he good enough to start now in your opinion?

I don't think Bryant is on this team.

But I think he could certainly be getting rotational snaps if he comes into camp and acts professional.

Beyond his pending legal trouble, he has a history of not working hard and laziness. If they can flip the switch to professional, he could take off.

Perhaps pairing him with a guy like Ogunjobi could be the best thing for him.

Can you elaborate? Is his health a concern?

I thought when healthy, he was one of our better pass rushers. I know we've gotten a lot younger since he last played but i still think he should be kept around for depth purposes. You need fresh bodies when playing a blitz-heavy defense.

I think it's pretty simple math.

He's 31 years old, he's coming off a major injury, and he hasn't played football in a year. He's also moving from a 3-4 end to playing inside in Williams' 4-3.

In his defense, he re-negotiated his contract so it's not like he's a high-priced veteran. However, with all of these depth moves and young talent on the D-Line, I could see the team keeping youth if it's at all close.

Don't get me wrong, I like Bryant. I also think having some veterans is a bonus. However, if it's a choice between cutting him or cutting a young player with promise (who is very close), I think they cut him.

It's going to be tough to make the team on the D-Line this year for the Browns, which is a very very good sign.

Just don't really see the need to carry his contract when he's 31, coming off a broken year, has no ties to the coaching staff and isn't really a schematic fit with Gregg Williams.

Shelton, Meder and Ogunjobi are likely locks to make the team. If Brantley survives, there's really no place for him.

Didnt Bryant play in Oakland when hue was there? Pretty sure they ran a 43 defense there. I understand if they cut him but I don't think it's necessary if he comes to camp and competes. It would be nice to have a veteran piece on the line but I can see them moving on.

I doubt that's how it goes in the moment. Usually there's alcohol involved for one or more parties. A setting like that means somebody will take a few wild chances, either the accusor, the accused, or both. Take this situation for example. Brantley shows up after midnight at a bar where some ex-girlfriend is with her friends. They know he is about to be a richer man in about three weeks. Who knows how right a mind Brantley had at that time of night, but safe to say the women had a few drinks and knew exactly what would cause a confrontation. It's bad all around and likely not what cooler heads would agree to do mid-Friday afternoon while at work.

In a detailed police report I read Brantley had been at home all night not drinking. He was called to the bar to pick up a friend who was drunk. The confrontation happened when he ran into an hook up and her friend while he was waiting to take his friend home. He was sitting off to the side just inside the bar. The friend of the hookup wanted a threesome and he said no and she felt disrespected and got in his face. He then left the bar to get away and wait for his friend. They followed and kept starting things with Brantly. The friend of the hookup then started punching Brantly in the face. She is 130lbs, he is 300+.

This is where it differs. Brantly claims he pushed her back to just get away and was reacting to getting punched in the face, she is claiming he hit her and used excessive force to get her away.

There is a big part of me that believes either way its the girls fault.

Also Brantley was in work out pants, thus why he wasnt in the bar, and he was not drinking. The girls were drunk.

How many DL make the team? 7? 8?

So that is:

Shelton
Garret
Medor
Ogunjobi
Cooper
Nassib
Ogbah
Brantley
Bryant
Wynn

For sure Bryant is in trouble. Maybe i am missing something but 2 or 3 of those guys are gone.
