Re: 2014 CLEVELAND BROWNS FREE AGENCY WATCH
The fact is that we don't even have to make choices. We don't even have to be clever about how the cap situation is handled. We can sign all of our guys this year, take care of all the guys next year, add a couple key FAs, and sign our draft class without being in cap danger. The cap is going up, resigning guys like DQ and Rubin will lower their numbers significantly, TRich penalty money will roll off the books, JT's number drops a couple mil.
Our bigger issue is whether guys don't want to come here, or want out. It's also an issue that we're not out in front of resigning guys long term prior to All-Pro years. Other than that, we're in a really special place with our cap situation.
Adding Byrd and/or Tate: Byrd is a better signing. We need a RB, especially with a possible rookie Qb working his way in. Byrd could very well make the defense special though. A good FS eats desperation plays, buys time for the pass rush, and forces Qb's to play safe. If we add Byrd to what we already have, there's not really anywhere safe you can go with the football.
Putting money into a FA RB, with an offense that makes 1k yd rushers out of absolute nobody's, doesn't make a whole lot of sense. We can afford it, but I don't see it as something that will make us a whole lot better on offense. It's more of a move that makes you appear more credible on paper, imo.
