2014 NFL Free Agency Thread

Re: 2014 Cleveland Browns Free Agency Watch

I'd give up both 3rds for Byrd

Re: 2014 Cleveland Browns Free Agency Watch

Byrd > Ward
Byrd < Ward + picks

If they tag him, unless they want insanely cheap compensation like a 3rd or 4th or something (which they'd probably near what they'd get via a compensatory pick), I can't see us going that route no matter how much Pettine likes him.

Re: 2014 Cleveland Browns Free Agency Watch

For the record, Grossi just said on the Really Big Show that Buffalo would tag Byrd so that they have leverage in a trade for him. Sounds like the Byrd interest is real.

Why does it always seems like Grossi comes out with his "breaking Browns news" after it's already been reported?

Had it been reported that tagging him would be for trade leverage? Or did you know because you figured it out on your own? Honest question and there is a big difference.. I had heard about the likelihood of Byrd getting the tag; however, I didn't put together that it would be for trade leverage.. I thought they wanted to keep him. I see myself as pretty good at putting these pieces together, so just imagine how many of his readers didn't know...

On Grossi, I just don't think he buys anything not told to him by his "sources". I really think he insulates himself from stories unless they come from certain people... Kind of like how I don't pay attention to what my friends say about the Cavs because I generally believe what's on this site...

Re: 2014 Cleveland Browns Free Agency Watch

According to a source, the Bills and Jairus Byrd may be parting ways soon. Byrd is set to become an unrestricted free agent, and the team has until Monday at 4 pm to place the franchise tag on their star safety. I'm told that it's unlikely they'll use the tag and that it's unlikely they'll reach an agreement before that time.

If the deadline passes, Byrd would head to unrestricted free agency, and could begin negotiating on the open market on March 8th. The free agency signing period opens March 11th.

The two sides have had productive discussions, and while things could change, it seems at this point that the two sides will split.

not sure how reliable they are but the Browns should be all over him if he hits free agency. they could really have a special secondary next year... (on a side note a question to the cap experts here: is it wise to invest a ton of money in your secondary? going after Byrd and keeping Ward would certainly cost a lot...)

That would be an ungodly amount of money in the secondary.

the cap is projected to rise over the next few years according to Schefter:

Salary cap projected to rise to about $133 million this year, expected to break $140 million next year and $150 million by 2016, per source

that might make it possible!?

Re: 2014 Cleveland Browns Free Agency Watch

The Browns finally have several players that could need big contracts to keep. What happens if Gordon and Cameron continue to put up pro-bowl numbers and we have too much money locked up in safeties?

Re: 2014 Cleveland Browns Free Agency Watch

Would it be incredible? Sure. Do I see it happening? No. Just can't imagine them tying up Ward AND Byrd.

Batista of NFL Network has it too. Not getting tagged.

Re: 2014 Cleveland Browns Free Agency Watch

I'm nowhere near as cap saavy regarding the NFL as I am the NBA...

Is there a way to front load the shit out of Byrd, Ward, and whoever else we're signing/re-upping this offseason so as not to mess up our flexibility in the next few years? I know the NBA prevents it.

yeah therein lies the problem, that's why you have to be careful. they also don't have a QB yet...

When was the last time the Browns were actually close to the cap, though? Butch Davis' last year here? With the rumblings of Rubin being released- who only has one year left anyway and the club already far under the cap- have to wonder if there isn't a mandate from higher up to cut costs. Especially now that each sector reports directly to Haslam. Be curious to see what kind of spending they actually do in FA.
