2017-2018 off-season thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
We had a big issue, the bench! I did a simple statistic work and I found that our starters have outplayed their starters
96.2 to 92.2
in the last three games our starters
104-95
114-84
113-94( yes game 5 our starters have destroyed the starters of the best team ever!)
While the bench has been a big garbage
their bench has destroyed our bench by an average of 10.6p a game an that is a huge gap!
We have to improve our garbage bench!

Batum, mkg, wilson chandler, rudy gay, and to a lesser extent pj tucker and james johnson.. Just someone big enough and mobile enough to bother kd and is not a liability on offense..

Glad ESPN decided that that article was worth putting behind their paywall. :dejection:

MKG is a huge liability on offense.

Two thoughts come to mind reading that:

1. Why the fuck would LeBron give two shits about a "Clippers curse?" Tom Haberstroh appears to COMPLETELY miss the point of LeBron returning to Cleveland, which, honestly, isn't surprising. Look, if James didn't grow up in NEO, he wouldn't give two shits about the "curse" here. I think we can all agree on that. LeBron doesn't seem interested so much in "ending curses," as much as he just wanted to win a title for Cleveland.

2. Why would Haberstroh assume Boston will be competitive because they got the 1 seed and the #1 pick? Did we not just see the Cavs beat the bejeesus out of Boston three times? Maybe if the Celtics can land one or two stars, but they haven't, and until they do, I see no reason to consider them a real threat.
All those brainiacs don't spill anything most of us already know ...the Cavs will make a move but what they are actually able to do remains to be seen, but they will do something.
But defense needs to be added to the bench where there is none.

Let's try and focus on some of the truths from that article.

Elhassan: A focus on the acquisition and development of cheap, two-way talent. The biggest thing the Warriors exploit are lineups that feature players who excel on one end but not the other. Since established two-way talent comes at a premium, Cleveland's best route is to invest more heavily in second-round draftees, D-Leaguers and international free agents. (Pretty obvious and I would love this but we suck at it save for Delly)

Kevin Pelton, ESPN Insider: I don't expect that they will and I don't really think they should. The Cavaliers showed over the last three games of the Finals that they can compete with the Warriors on relatively even terms. They need to be ready to compete to start a potential fourth consecutive matchup, which hasn't been the case in Games 1 and 2 either of the past two years. (Our coaching needs to get better)

Jeremias Engelmann:
Irving and Love are generally pulling their weight and should be traded only if a great deal -- with another superstar -- is offered.

Unfortunately, they haven't used this advantage enough. Instead of signing great players at a discount, they've signed good-but-not-great players to above-market deals (James of course is complicit in this)

I would assume most agree. We seem to strike out on player after player here. It's either a lack of homework where we are signing guy who are past their prime or were only useful in another system or our coaching is terrible. Maybe both.

Yes bench is trash. Just want to add that their bench played more mins so GS starters would have less mins then are starters but your stats intrigued my interest.

Game #1 bench

Cavs 21pts 81mins .25pts per min
GS 24pts 80mins .30pts per min

Game #2 bench

Cavs 30pts 95mins .31pts per min
GS 31pts 88mins .35pts per min

Game #3 bench

Cavs 11pts 56mins .19pts per min
GS 23pts 74mins .31pts per min

Game #4 bench

Cavs 23pts 64mins .35pts per min
GS 32pts 75mins .42pts per min

Game #5 bench

Cavs 7pts 51mins .13pts per min
GS 34pts 72mins .47pts per min

Totals

Cavs 92pts 347mins .26pts per min
GS 144pts 389mins .37pts per min

As we all see GS bench outscored us per min in every single game and for the most part are bench got worse as the series went on while GS got better. Game 5 was the killer

Are bench mins also got reduced as the series progress. Its hard enough to beat their starters let alone get consistently out performed by their bench as well

That last part especially needs highlighting. People argue that those contracts were market value. At the time it was very foreseeable that within a year or two they could begin to underperform and we would be left with assets on untradeable contracts.

Roleplayer flexibility is a must for competing teams

Trade Love for Cousins and then try to coax Carmelo to force his way to the Cavs. Hope Bogut takes the minimum but if not then Cousins/Tavares is the fallback at center. Then hope Bulls buyout Wade midseason so he can join the party. Only have to get lucky with one of Carmelo/Wade to get that 4th scorer who can create his own shot. George would be far more of a flight risk than Cousins and I would rather have Cousins since Melo, Lebron, Kyrie, etc can all become more aggressive defending the perimeter when they know they have a real center to protect the rim behind them. Multiple improved defenders beats whatever a single player like Paul George would add defensively. Managing Cousins who wants to win is a leadership thing Lebron should be able to handle. After Lebron retires, an inside-outside combo of Cousins-Kyrie would keep Cleveland attractive to free agents.

Disappointing season? What?

Sure, the regular season sucked, but the playoffs were amazing. The Cavs had the greatest playoff offense of all-time per ORTG stats, they went 12-1 on their road to the Finals, game four was the greatest offensive game in NBA history, and they put up a fight against the most talented team in NBA history.

I don't know... Warriors had more talent than we did. But the playoffs were incredibly fun, we played hard, and were historically great. Hard to call that a disappointment.
no championship = unsuccessful season. Apart from the big 3, and game 4, no body played well enough as they should have. We literally relied on lebron to get where we were, the Cavs looked like lakers when he would be on the bench or resting. Our regular season was a hot mess as well. Final's made is clear that we don't have the size or the athleticism to compete with GS, and the bench is aging and stinks.

So you only watch sports for the chance of winning a title? Honest question. I think a lot of fans appreciate the journey, too. So declaring it a failure is an opinion, not a statement of fact.

To me, we just got to watch the best, most ruthless playoff offense of all-time go to the Finals. In the Finals, they faced the most talented team of all-time, and they lost. It sucks. Doesn't necessarily mean the season was a failure.

I do respect your opinion, though. We may just be at an impasse.
