2017-2018 Season Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I'll reserve my indignation until seeing who ultimately ends up with the job.

Timing is odd regardless, however.

Interested to hear how the behind-the-scenes played out but frustrating timing regardless. FWIW, A good friend of mine (his family is a large financial supporter to OSU) told me that Billy Donovan is a target.

Alot of heat behind some of these names flying around.

Make no mistake, this has to be one of the more coveted jobs in the country.

If they get Sean Miller, all is forgiven. I've always heard he'd be Matta's successor. Given the program he has at Arizona, it's hard to believe he'd leave, but I guess we'll find out now.

Are we even going to be able to get one of these guys at this point? Or are we going to be stuck with Chris Jent for a year?

Just seems real late in the calendar year to hire a new coach unless he's coming from another league...

Just impossible incompetence in this program right now.

Those first 3 names seem like serious long shots. Especially Stevens and Wright. Bennett I'm not even sure if I would want. His style/brand of basketball is so fucking boring to watch. Miller or Donovan would be great. Although, Miller seems like a long shot as well given that Arizona is a top notch basketball program. Hopefully Donovan wants back into CBB and comes here. He would be my top choice.

The fact that Matta said he'll be helping directly with the search gives me hope this could be a possible scenario.

I agree with you on your latter point, though. This is probably the most loaded roster Miller has had in his tenure at Arizona.

Beau Bishop was on 92.3 and said he thinks Billy Donovan has already been called and he believes that OSU has their guy in mind already

A name I've seen thrown out on a couple message boards, but not by the media, that makes some sense is Fred Hoiberg. Guy was pretty successful at Iowa State and coached a more wide open style of game. I can't imagine he's enjoyed his last two years in Chicago. Their management is a mess and have left Hoiberg with a roster not remotely conducive to his system. I'm guessing he'd be amenable to a change of scenery. Now, the one issue would be his recruiting prowess. His Iowa State teams were made up mostly of transfers and questionable cases.

Why is that? I follow the Buckeyes (and wife is an alumn), but they aren't really a basketball powerhouse. Sure, football will cover the costs, but still...

To me, schools like UCLA, Indiana, Kentucky, Duke, NC, Kansas, Louisville... those are the true coveted basketball coaching jobs.

Then you've got the schools like Arizona, Georgetown, Memphis, U Conn, Syracuse, and maybe Mich St., maybe Texas? I guess some would put Ohio St here... but I'm not sure I agree.

Then again, get a top recruiter type (is Billy Donovan the Urban Meyer of basketball?), and the lure might be strong, but I just don't see the Ohio State basketball program at the same level of desire-ability as the first group.

What am I missing, or does the football success raise the basketball program that much too?

Money and the OSU brand. We have state-of-the-art facilities that attract recruits, one of the largest college basketball venues in the country, we are publicly supported by Lebron, which can open up some opportunities for coaches due to the recognizability/legitimacy factor and we routinely have taken care of our coaches, giving them bonuses for their performance.

We already have an attentive fan base and when compared to the last few years, there's less pressure for someone to come in and "build their system", giving potential new hires a longer leash.

Figured I'd post a scholarship/roster breakdown for the next couple seasons. Regardless of who takes this job, their first year in Columbus could be pretty rough. However, depending on the recruiting prowess of whoever is brought in, that could also mean a quick turnaround for 2018-19.

2017-18 (9 scholarship players total, 13 allowed by NCAA):
Seniors (2) - Kam Williams, Jae'Sean Tate
Juniors (2) - Keita Bates-Diop (RS), CJ Jackson
Sophomores (2) - Andre Wesson, Micah Potter
Freshmen (3) - Derek Funderburk (RS), Kaleb Wesson, Braxton Beverly

2018-19 (9 prospective scholarship players total):
Seniors (2) - Keita Bates-Diop (RS), CJ Jackson
Juniors (2) - Andre Wesson, Micah Potter
Sophomores (3) - Derek Funderburk (RS), Kaleb Wesson, Braxton Beverly
2018 recruits (2) - Dane Goodwin, Justin Ahrens
