2017 Browns Regular Season

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
It seemed like Hue likes Pryor and coached him well. If we could get the Pryor from last year at a reduced price, I think that would be an excellent move.

People seem to be using this story as another reason to make fun of the Browns for some reason.

To me this shows that they aren't letting pride or grudges get in the way of trying to improve the team. Remember, we offered Pryor a great contract and he and his agent botched the situation.

I guess we can expect the Browns to make him an offer again this offseason. If Hue and Saunders survive the season it would probably be worth it.

Yeah I don't really get it. Shit on the Browns for not overpaying for him and then shit on the Browns for trying to get him?

TBH though, he's been about as productive as Kenny Britt, even benched, so I don't even like the move, especially when you only have him for 8 games in a meaningless season.

Ok fuck it. I’ll open the can of worms

I’m still really pissed off we didn’t take Foster. I HATE drafting for need over BPA and this season could not have illustrated that more.

I don’t know if any of you have watched San Fran, but Reuben Foster is really really fucking good.

Objectively, PFF has him ranked as the 4th best linebacker in the NFL with a grade of 90.1 which qualifies as elite in their grading

But we didn’t “need” a linebacker because we had Collins (has been awful this year. Pff grade of 35.5 ranked 82nd best linebacker) and we needed a safety so we took Peppers. And now instead of having an elite LB we have the 81st ranked safety in the league, but at least he was at a position of need!!!

And this isn’t just picking a player playing well at random. I wanted Foster badly when we traded down and he was still there. Putting need aside Foster was easily the better prospect... but we didn’t “need” him so we drafted for need instead and now are a worse team for it

Stop drafting for need. It makes you pass on players like Khalil Mack because we already have Kruger and Mingo. Don’t pass on elite talent at premier positions

Now I’m not saying take a LT first overall while we have Thomas in his prime, but I’m taking Foster over Peppers even though we have a good front 7. He’s just the better player

I agree with you. Smart teams don’t take their depth chart into the draft room.

This is all well and good, but you can't just ignore contracts and roster construction.

The Browns literally just gave then 27-year-old Jamie Collins 4 years, $50M and then 24-year-old Christian Kirksey 4 year, $38M to each play outside linebacker this past offseason. This isn't a case of drafting BPA over need. The expectation is that both of those guys, given their contract statuses, would play at a high level as they entered their prime years. There wasn't room for ANOTHER outside linebacker, which is what Foster is. Especially not using a 1st round draft pick on one.

Now...

I (and many others) anticipated Gregg Williams would play SIGNIFICANTLY more nickel with five defensive backs and just two linebackers, but he has - quite stubbornly in my opinion given how bad all three linebackers have graded in coverage - decided to stick with three linebackers at basically all times.

Let me be clear about this next point because it's very important. Gregg Williams is a bad football coach. The reason why the Browns defense is playing better is because they have more talent than last year. That's it. His schemes and ludicrously aggressive risk/reward mentality on blitzes is nonsensical.

The Browns shouldn't be playing three linebackers at one time. That's literally begging teams to destroy you in the passing game, which they've done to the Browns... all year long.

And besides... the real reason Foster slipped, above all else, was medical concerns. And what do you know... he has already missed 6 of the first 10 games of his career.

I don't think they necessarily drafted for need. They likely red flagged Foster alongside a bunch of other teams and still had Peppers/Njoku higher on their draft boards due to Foster's issues. Trust me, I was cheering to get OJ Howard/Foster the entire draft after 12 and it just didn't happen. These types of decisions come down to prospect evaluation and the FO has much more data than a casual NFL draft fan does.

I mean, the bulk of us thought Hue was a good hire at the time too, but he's looked like a complete inept asshat out there every Sunday.

Williams is decidedly not awesome.

I think Peppers can still be a quality player in the NFL. He's the most egregious example on the whole roster of a player not being used in his optimal position.
