2017 Cleveland Browns Defense

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
My PFF membership expired though, and I don't feel like re-upping at this point though.
I haven't looked too close at it, but I thought I read they raised prices significantly.

Bitonio was a solid pick also, but you're right about Crowell. Farmer's draft outside those few pick-ups were pretty horrid, though.
Sadly when you look back, Farmer's regime ranks about 3rd best out of 7 going back to Dwight Clark. Kirksey and Bitonio were plus picks. Shelton might be as well. Duke Johnson not a bad find in the 3rd. 3 hits out of 10 picks in the top 3 rounds passes for success in Browns history. Holmgren-Heckert had 4 hits in 12 tries, but their misses were not as spectacular as Farmer's. Phil Savage is #2 in my book, with only one really big whiff (Quinn), and the Joe Thomas pick elevating the rest of his mostly mediocre selections.

Kirksey is indeed probably the the best non-first round pick in new Browns history. I'm excited to see what he and Collins can do this year. But that front 4 is going to be very young... We are all imagining the "3 years from now" version of most of them, I think, and getting a little giddy.

A healthy Haden makes a huge difference in our secondary. I'm just not sure how much we can rely on him to stay healthy.

Fuck we really bumbled that K'waun Williams situation.

One of the worst starting CBs in the league over the last two years, if I'm not mistaken.

Do you think he's coming to play corner, though? My guess would be a move to free safety, similar to what his brother did.

He's a corner who excels against the run, and as you said, wasn't impressive as a cover corner.

This year, even with the growth of retained players, addition of new players, and a competent DC, I still don't think we'll be top 20 in total defense. We'll most likely transition from a team that gives up a ton of rushing yards to a team that gives up a ton of passing yards, both because we will be in more competitive games and because our front seven (and Peppers) will do a good job of stopping the run.
The combination of D-line depth and a hopefully run-heavy offense will keep the front 7 from getting gassed and be a further boost to the run defense. I don't think the pass rush is going to be anywhere near good enough to overcome the deficiencies in the secondary though. I think we're a #1 CB and average FS away from being an above-average defense.

First, I think the Browns' first priority as far as signings go is him. Juice said something in here about Bitonio being worked-on and it came out to be right; something about Kirksey was said in that post as well (I think).

I remember saying something to my cousin about Kirksey being a solid pick by Farmer back before the 2015 season because he was showing flashes. That fell on deaf ears at the time due to the ire towards Farmer, but it just goes to show you that some guys just take some time to get there. Kirksey wasn't a stud in years 1 & 2 although he showed flashes and was dependable, but he's blossomed into something special given time with the organization. Let's hope this development curve was noticed by the front office and, more importantly, the Haslams.
I agree.

Actually, not to say it works for every player, but taking thin/athletic linebackers out of college in the late rounds does not upset me. Specifically, if they were productive at the college level, and showed a plus ability in coverage, I'm not worried about the Browns ability to put 10-15 pounds on these guys over a season or two.

Honestly, Kirko's development is the reason that I find Kenneth Olugbode to be an interesting UDFA out of Colorado. He's only around 222 lbs right now, but at 6'1, he's a speed guy that could be something if he gets up around 235. Uber productive in college, just thin.

Here's to Ogbah having a Vic Beasley type jump in his second year.

He was damn good as a rookie. His development will be a key storyline for this defense this year. Probably much more than any of the rookies.
Another leap from Shelton too would do wonders. Let's see a legit pro Bowl season from Danny. He and Ogbah making noise and disrupting blocking schemes will only make things that much easier for Garrett.

Jamie Collins is an athletic freak with pedigree and signed on to stay here because he believes we are close. He believes in the coaches. He wanted to be a part of this....

No one actually believes this right? :chuckle:

Jamie was in it for the money. There's no convincing me otherwise.

I don't care to convince you, but being "in it for the money" would seem to be a conclusion one draws when a guy tests the market for, you know, every last dollar. So, not only are you shrugging off Jamie Collins' actual words, you're also shrugging off how he played his free agency decision.

He took a pretty reasonable deal. The 4 year commitment was unexpected, IMO. I think he could've commanded a contract in the $15 million a year range.

He's only praised Hue since coming here and reiterated that when he signed:

“Good people don't come too often and when they do, you've got to keep them in your corner. I wasn't just going to bail out on them like that and they threw some good money so yeah, of course, I’m staying here.”

There's "good money" and then there's Von Miller money. Glad we only paid the former.

He took the deal prior to ever meeting with teams. He could have tested the market and sucked up every penny, but nope, the money was there and he took it because he wanted to stay.

After all, we offered Tony Jefferson more money than the Ravens, but he told us no. Jamie didn't even test the market--yet he stayed. I don't know how to look at it any other way.
