2017 College Football Season/Playoff Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Oh, no doubt. There is so much football to be played. I could even see a scenario where both OSU and Oklahoma get in there. Wouldn't it be something to have a rematch with them?

We would win 67-5

Is our inclusion over a 1-loss SEC really a given? It's difficult not to overthink a bit. I think the Cowboys get it done against the Sooners although history isn't on their side this weekend.

While our offensive performance was really encouraging this past week, I'd like to see consistency before I become 'confident' in the offense if that makes sense.

Yeah, I'd say a one loss SEC champ would be a given. There is just too much respect for the top teams in that conference (i.e. Bama).

I'd say that the Oklahoma-Oklahoma State game is a tossup. It does help that it is in Stillwater at least.

As for the offense, I'm with you there. I'd like to see them move the ball well against Iowa, MSU, UM, and Wiscy to be completely sold on them. All of those teams have decent defenses. I do think they have more weapons this year than last year so they should have success against those defenses.

Notable games this week

Auburn at Texas AM

Auburn already with 2 losses and still plays both Uga and Bama. If they get to 5 losses, will that still be a quality for Clemson, Uga and Bama?

Penn State at MSU

Sucks that MSU gagged that game at Northwestern. Now looks like MSU will be a 4 loss team. A 3 loss MSU would probably be ranked and would be a solid win for OSU. But we certainly want PSU to win out.

Wake Forest at ND

Wake Forest is solid. Upset alert? Probably not.

Bedlam

I think we finish ahead of a 1 loss TCU/Okie State if either wins out, but behind Oklahoma. So go Okie St!

Virginia Tech at Miami

Does this really matter? I guess maybe we want Virginia Tech, so we can root for Miami to beat ND and/or Clemson.

LSU at Bama

Geaux Tigers! Uga or Bama losing before the SEC Championship game would eliminate the 2 SEC team possibility, although I doubt a 1 loss non SEC Champ gets in over OSU

Oregon at Washington

If Oregon wins, the PAC12 is officially out of 1 loss teams, although I doubt Washington jumps OSU. Besides, Arizona is winning that conference.

edit - Should add Wisky at Indiana. We want to face and beat an undefeated Wisky at the Big Ten Champ game

Only ones I'd add are...

Clemson at NC ST

Obviously, any Clemson loss is a win for us. This is the toughest regular season game left for them. Go 'Pack.

Wisconsin at Indiana

Wisconsin remaining undefeated increases the chances of Ohio State jumping over someone that is currently ahead of them. Therefore, every game they play is important to us. Some will say OSU makes the playoff no matter what...while that may be true, this could still have an impact on which semifinal game we play in.

1-loss SEC team, or a 1-loss SEC Champion?

Because a 1-loss Big 10 Champion gets in over a 1-loss SEC team 10/10 times.

Sorry, meant the loser of the CCG provided it's their only loss. I guess given the small sample size of the committee's tendencies it's hard to not to think about it.

I went back and fixed Wiscky/Indy, but how did I miss Nc State and Clemson? Maybe the biggest game of the week besides Bedlam! Oversight on my part.

Well, OK. I misread your post. Yeah, a one loss SEC champ gets in over the Buckeyes. But, a one loss loser of the SEC championship game is not as clear. I think Bama gets more respect than Georgia. So, if Bama loses a close game, it might be possible that they get in regardless. I think Georgia would be out in that scenario. But, that is just a guess on my part.

UGA has that win over ND on their resume though.

Bama's resume if they lose to UGA...would be awful. They wouldn't have one single noteworthy win.

I guess it depends on if Auburn is considered noteworthy. Plus, they did beat Florida State when they had their quarterback for most of the game. I realize they've fallen off the map now. But, I'm not sure how much that win will be weighted since they had their QB in the Bama game until the 4th quarter. FSU was well regarded before he got hurt.

Georgia beating Auburn and ND should be factored in there if they lose to Bama. The reality is I don't think the committee would want to put either team in there if they lose the SEC championship game. That wouldn't be easy to justify and would lead to a lot of blow-back. I feel the cleanest thing for the committee is to have as many conference champs as they can in there.

Bama would have nothing to go on other "the eye test." Which is silly, because all of these teams look like top 4 teams. And they have a resume. And will have a conference championship. Putting Bama in (with a loss to UGA) over any team currently ranked 3-6 would be totally ridiculous. At LEAST UGA has that Notre Dame win they could point to. Even then, it'd be pretty ridiculous.

Any 1 loss team below Ohio State is in trouble, though. The Pac 12 is already done. The UGA/Bama loser would get in over them. The Big 12 is also screwed if Oklahoma loses, I think.

To be fair, Bama's 4 remaining games are all against teams who are currently ranked. Very possible LSU and Miss St end up with 3 losses and stay top 20, and Auburn might stay ranked with 4 losses.

However, I don't see how wins over those 3 teams and a loss to Georgia puts them over a 1 loss OSU team with a conference championship and 2 top 10 wins, plus wins over possibly ranked Michigan and MSU.

Perhaps OSU has spoiled me to the point where I haven't even realized I don't pay a ton of attention to the lower-echelon rankings, but it seems undeserving to have 3 losses and be ranked. I sound like a ridiculously uninformed fan, but is that commonplace season-by-season?

Yep...case-in-point, last season.

5 of the top 10 in the final AP poll had 3 losses.

9 teams had 3 losses.
8 teams had 4 losses.
1 team had 5 losses.

So 18 of the 25 teams in the final poll had 3 or more losses. 14 had 3 or more in 2015. 16 had 3 or more in 2014...

Pretty much the majority of final polls are made up of teams with at least 3 losses.

We are most certainly spoiled.
