2017 College Football Season/Playoff Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Who is your guys’ top five right now? Best five teams in college football

Five teams regardless of rankings for me and just pure talent (no order):
- Oklahoma
- Auburn
- Clemson
- Georgia
- Penn State / Ohio State

I think all of these teams would beat any other team in the country in a hypothetical matchup.

I tend to agree with you guys. I still don’t quite understand how a team like Syracuse could sneak on a team like Clemson or how Iowa destroys Ohio State. But I’m fairly new to following CFB to this degree. Seems like emotions and trap games are very really at this level. Thanks for the info.

Ohio State, assuming they beat Wisky, have multiple better wins than Alabama’s best win (either LSU or Miss St, take your pick).

We didn’t lose to the only good team we played all year. Our strength of schedule wasn’t a fucking joke.

Honestly believe that Ohio State beats Bama on a neutral field. They’re not good.

Still don’t think there is a chance that the Buckeyes get in over Alabama.

That Iowa loss is awful. Buckeyes might have more quality wins, but their loss is worse than Bamas.

Last years 31-0 probably won’t help either

Who do you let in?

1-loss Alabama, no conf. champ, two solid wins over LSU & Miss St., loss in marquee game vs. Auburn, 24th SOS

2-loss B1G champ Ohio St., two marquee wins over Wisconsin and PSU, solid win vs. MSU, “good” loss vs. Oklahoma and horrible loss @ Iowa, 6th SOS

If Clemson loses to South Carolina, but beats Miami, I think OSU should get in over Clemson.

Why? The committee kept talking about how the loss to Syracuse isn't really a loss, even though Clemson was losing when Bryant went out. Well, OSU lost their QB, while losing to a much better team than Syracuse, and came back and won. If losing your QB in game is such a big deal, then OSU should get credit for overcoming it.

In 2015, OSU had basically 1 quality win, over Michigan. They were 11-1 and did not win their division. In the final CFP rankings, Stanford, an 11-2 conference champ was ahead of OSU because of more quality wins.

That's the most analogous situation to this year, IMO.

The loss to Syracuse wasn’t really a loss.

Have to completely destroy Wisconsin to have a shot.

That is a great argument for us. There is precedent.

So ESPN just did a "blind resume" of 3 different 2 loss teams. The three teams ended up being OSU, USC and ND. As it turned out, according to FPI (ESPNs "Football Power Index"). It turned out that OSU had less top 40 FPI wins and the worst SOS according to the FPI. So it seems like OSU had a worse resume.

Except, coming into this week....USC is 16th in FPI, ND is 10th in FPI....OSU IS #2 IN THEIR FREAKING FPI....AND #1 ALABAMA JUST LOSS....SO OSU'S RESUME IS THE BEST YOU IGNORANT JACKASSES.

That graphic is so fucking stupid. As if a win over the 40th ranked team is equal to a win over a top 5 ranked team.

Critical thinking doesn't happen at ESPN though.

Jerry Palm, who I have found to be pretty good at forecasting these things:

Alabama still has a chance at the playoff, though. The Crimson Tide will be the top one-loss team out of the playoff projection above. It will be interesting to see what the committee does with the Tide this week. However, being the top one-loss team does not mean that Alabama could not be jumped by a two-loss team.

I think the CFP will be:

Oklahoma (assuming they beat TCU)
OSU/Wisconsin (B1G Winner)
Auburn/Georgia (SEC Winner)
Clemson (assuming they beat Miami)

Obviously if Oklahoma or Clemson lose things can change quite a bit, but I think any team not listed here needs a bit of help to get in. I don't see how anyone really gets in that's not listed here unless one of those teams loses.
