2017 College Football Season/Playoff Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
More good news for us...apparently Hocutt talked to Heather Dinich after the show.

Heather Dinich ESPN Senior Writer

I asked Kirby Hocutt how big the gap is between No. 5 Alabama and No. 8 Ohio State. He said, "Reflecting on the discussions over the last two days, obviously there's three spots that separate them right there, but it's close separation from team No. 5, Alabama; 6, Georgia; 7, Miami; 8, Ohio State. Those teams are close. Very little separation in the committee's eyes between teams 5 through 8."

Typically, the selection committee chair doesn't give much insight into what the group might do, as they don't like to "project," but Kirby Hocutt offered some insight as to what winning the Big Ten could mean to Ohio State. "Well, obviously it would be an impressive win that Ohio State would add to their body of work," Hocutt said. "It would also be an important designation to have on their resume when comparing them to any comparable team. That being said, that's probably as far as I would feel comfortable going in just trying to speculate what may or may not happen this coming weekend. But obviously a conference championship being added to the resume is important when being compared to comparable teams."

Oh please let us push bama out...lol

I think best case scenario in other games for OSU is

Oklahoma beats TCU
Georgia beats Auburn
Clemson beats Miami
Boise beats Fresno

The last one is just because it will remove Fresno from the top 25, if that means anything.

I feel like there is a lot of debate on the OU/TCU game and UGA/Auburn game. I am confident that we want OU over TCU. I am more unsure about UGA/Auburn. Clemson/Miami I think means very little, but just to be safe, we want Clemson to win.

Why OU over TCU? Wouldn't the latter winning push the Sooners out?

We definitely want OU over TCU. That makes our loss look more forgiving, and it takes away the small possibility of adding TCU to the mix (unlikely) and grouping Oklahoma in the - OSU/Bama/possibly Clemson if they lose - conversation for that 4 spot where they would have the H2H checkmark. So we need OU over TCU for sure. To avoid another possible argument we need Clemson over Miami. The toss up is Auburn/UGA. A Georgia win would knock out Auburn, and then the Bama convo would be a toss up because of how Auburn manhandled Bama but split with UGA.

In that scenario it'd be:
Georgia
OU
Clemson
with OSU/Bama/Pac-12 champ for the 4 spot although the Pac-12 is most likely going to be on the outside looking in in that convo.

Edit: If OU loses in the top of this comment, there would only be 2 spots guaranteed with the ACC/SEC champs. So OU, Bama, tOSU, and the SEC/ACC losers fighting for the final 2 spots

Why OU over TCU? Wouldn't the latter winning push the Sooners out?
But Oklahoma whooped our ass in The Shoe..

Our resume is WAY stronger than Bama's but that's not the case with OU.

I'm not sure about that. That would almost guarantee Bama getting one of the final 2 spots along with the SEC/ACC champs. Which would leave OU, and tOSU as probably the 2 most realistic options for the final spot, which is where head to head would come into play, even though we would have a conference title

Our resume is stronger but an OU loss would justify Bama getting a spot even more. Our resume is stronger but Oklahoma doesn't have an Iowa type loss and they have the H2H like you said. So OU losing is worst case for us. I don't see a way we get in if OU loses.

Eh, I can't see OU losing their conf champ. and not dropping out of the top 4. That'd be ridiculous.

You guys are basically saying OU doesn't need to show up.

It went fairly unnoticed but last night the committee basically put in Alabama into the playoffs by moving Fresno State into the rankings, keeping Mississippi State in the rankings, moving LSU up one spot and Auburn up 4 spots to #2 even with two loses.

Totally agree.

Agreed. Joel Klatt just gave them shit on FS1 for that. He said it's too obvious its not even funny. They "cooked the books" lol. Listed exactly what you said and said it's an "invitational' and a "sponsor's exemption" if Bama makes it. Sucks when 6 of the 13 committee members have SEC/ACC ties

I don't think so. At least not for sure, or not in a way that would help us.

We'd have the same record as Oklahoma. They'd have quality wins over us, TCU and Okie St, which is pretty similar to our wins of PSU, MSU and Wisky. We'd have the conference title, but they beat us by double digits in our place.

Maybe a loss knocks OU out, but they may stay ahead of us, which in turn knocks us out. Maybe the committee puts TCU ahead of Oklahoma, because TCU would've lost to Oklahoma at Norman, but beaten them at a neutral site, had the same record and have a conference champ. So maybe TCU jumps both of us, and the committee is free to put Bama in ahead of Oklahoma and OSU.

I think it's more "if Oklahoma is out, then so is OSU."

Cant even really be mad as Buckeye fans. If we didnt shit down our legs against a mediocre Iowa team we would control our own destiny right now.
