2017 Spring Training Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I think Tito is the best skipper in baseball, but I'm also skeptical that the Yandy decision is completely about defense. The Super 2 situation seems to influence the Tribe's thinking here even though he's already 25.

Why would it?

He's going back down when Kipnis is activated, which delays his service time until he would be recalled.

Same situation as Naquin last season, who likely avoids it as well.

Not about when the clock starts, it's total service time earned.

You don't think there is any possibility that Yandy remains on the roster at the utility spot when Kipnis returns instead of Gonzalez/Martinez?

No, because of his Super 2 status.

I'd want him getting as many ABs as possible because he's presumably got a future here.

Gotcha. I wonder if he could even get some time at 1B down in Columbus in preparation for a potential role as 1B/DH next season if/when Santana walks in the winter.

That's Brantley's job

Ideally, you'd want Bobby Bradley to establish himself as the heir apparent there.

If Yandy can play somewhere other than 1B, that's where you'd want him to play. That bat can play in a lot of places, but if you can stick him at a corner spot anywhere on the diamond it's a win. So long as his defense is playable.

With the fact we kept Naquin out of spring training last season and the fact we are trying to win now, the super 2 issue is actually not even in Tito's mind. He needs to go out of camp with the best overall player.

Diaz has some of the skills needed to be an above average fielder, but he has not put it together. He is the opposite of the way Ramirez was a few seasons ago, who we all knew could field, but couldn't put the bat together. Diaz has the potential and has the physical tools but he is inconsistent and he hasnt put it together, he struggles with his throwing footwork and other stuff like that.

Does Diaz's production with hit bat produce more runs than his defense will give up? If a player gives up more runs defensively than his bat produces then he shouldn't be playing in the field. That is the question about Diaz right now. Sadly I have to agree with Az_ since if Diaz's fielding gives up more runs than he can produce then we have to go with someone else at 3rd.

Such a gut feeling as Diaz in a lineup can protect another guy and produce more runs than just what you see in the box score. His bat gives everyone better looks if he can produce like we expect at the Major League level.

Just curious how bad his fielding is. He played when i went to the game and looked decent.

Essentially comparing the defensive numbers between Chisenhall and Diaz when it comes to 3rd base, Chisenhall was better and he got moved from 3B. Diaz has a better ceiling Defensively and will flash he has it, but then the next time he will mess up something routine. They aren't asking him to be Urshela/Ramirez, they want him to make every routine play/be at last league average all the time. That is what they want to see from him

Which defensive numbers are you looking at?
