2018 Cleveland Browns Off Season Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Yeah, I guess. Just seems like his "moxie" is his most talked about aspect, as I've said before.

I don't think that's true at all. People here spent the entire college season questioning his character and maturity, with his positive qualities mostly being related to his on-field play. It's only recently that those character concerns have seemingly been put to rest, but instead of focusing on the fact that one of his most glaring (perceived) weaknesses doesn't actually exist but all of his other positive attributes still do, people here trying to play it off like he's been a character pick all along and it's a load of bullshit.

Hmm? All I see is how what he did on the field at OU is bordering on irrelevant because he can't do that in the NFL. But he has moxie! And it factor! Not saying just here, nor am I speaking against the pick. Simply that I am far more curious about how his play will translate to the NFL. If people are telling me we're going to have to develop some kind of gimmick offense to make him good, color me worried.

I haven't heard anyone try to sell him on moxie or IT factor until recently. You know, after we already picked him. Prior to that, it was his NFL arm, his accuracy, his ability to function under pressure, his lack of turnovers, and so forth that sold people on him. Yeah, there are questions about his offensive system in college, but there's no question that Baker Mayfield has an NFL arm and is incredibly accurate with his throws. He even measured a bit taller at the combine than people expected, which helped alleviate some of the concerns about his size.

Yeah, when asked what he liked about him, it’s not as if Dorsey immediately shifted to “it.” He mentioned his on-field ability before anything else. So at least he sees things ON the field that are actually demonstrable to him.

We've been reading way different things then. Oh well.

The Browns, the forward thinkers that they are, will avoid any cheerleader-related disasters by not having them in the first place.

Yeah but Cleveland cheerleaders would be THICC amirite?

Dorsey mentioned accuracy, quick release, mobility, arm strength and on field production all before “moxie” when asked what he liked most about Mayfield so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Moxie/intangibles/leadership/it factor - whatever you want to call it - is a very attractive thing to have in a QB prospect... IF he can also do all the tangible things you want on the field obviously.

Dorsey and company clearly think he can.

Yeah, definitely wasn't talking about Dorsey when I said that. But yes, I am glad Dorsey thinks he can succeed in the NFL. I'm guessing he wouldn't have selected Baker #1 overall if he didn't think as much.

Fair enough, but wouldn’t what Dorsey and Hue see in Mayfield really be what matters in this case? They’re the ones with jobs on the line.

Like who cares if fans and message board people are citing his moxie? The guys in charge of the organization were sold on his ability to play QB first and foremost. His personality just solidified it.

Yeah, it is, I wasn't coming at the pick or anything. I said before we even took him that I was warming up to him. While he wouldn't be my first choice, I don't really see any reason why he can't be a star in this league (from my uninformed eyes anyways). Just noticed prior to the draft those who were in favor of Baker that I talked to always cited him being this "winner" and "overcomer" and all the cliches we've heard before. Thus I was kind of wondering, like, if he was 6'4 would he have been the consensus #1 pick? Not really important, just musing.

I get what you’re saying.

I would be a lot more worried if the people who made the decision to pick him were ONLY citing intangible things. But thankfully they’ve made it pretty clear the intangible things only solidified their belief in his tangible skills.

And to answer your question, give Baker 2 inches of height and 10 pounds of muscle and I think he’s the unanimous No. 1 pick for NFL evaluators.
