2018 Draft Prospects Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
reductio ad absurdum is most certainly a fallacy. I've never said "he can't run the ball at all.". Feel free to look through my past posts. I think his best role is a slot receiver and backup running back because as you have noted, people would like to see him on the field more. I have called him "meh" as a runner, and his runs prior to this season weren't very good. This year he was used sparingly as a runner - 80 attempts - from scrimmage, averaged 4.1 a carry, and made his impact catching the ball. He wasn't used as much as a runner because he wasn't very good in that capacity in the past, he's better out of the backfield. While people aggressively put words in my mouth, they have also claimed Hue never used him, when in fact very few skill position offensive players were on the field for the Browns as much as Duke. Again, that could be called reductio ad absurdum by the polite or just fucking wrong in my worse moments.

I understand the arguments that you get more value out of Fitzpatrick at 4 and a RB in the 2nd round than you do Barkley at 4. I don't even disagree with it. But save the Duke Johnson shit. He's a nice player, but he's nothing special. Barkley could very well be the best back in the league for a decade. If they were to take him, I don't give a fuck about what it does to Duke Johnson's touches.

I'm a huge Minkah fan and believe he'd be perfect for our defense at #4. However, he isn't Jalen Ramsey. Ramsey is the prototype @ 6'1, 210, 4.4 forty with the perfect attitude for a lockdown corner. He also isn't Marshon Lattimore who has the combination of elite athleticism and technique.

Minkah should test well, but his elite traits are his versalitity and character. He can play outside, slot, and free safety all at a very high level. He tackles well in space and has great instincts once the ball is in his hands. He would be the leader of the secondary on day one and will improve everybody on defense.

We are missing that right now from the secondary hence why I think he is the guy we have to grab in this draft regardless of who else we sign or draft.

Barkley right now is considered the top player overall in this draft by many draft analysts, so I won't be mad if we draft him, but I think Minkah is too good of a player to pass up especially when we truly need him in our secondary. We have a strong DLine now for the most part. We have productive LBs, but they arent exceptionally strong in coverage and we have had guys like Peppers playing in the wrong position all season. We have to get more help at DB and Minkah fits exactly what we need in our secondary since he is likely the best DB period in this draft whether he ends up at FS or CB. Also with starters galore in the second round for RBs, we gotta make the smart move and skip on Barkley at 4 if he is there.

Mel Kiper’s Mock 1.0 is out and it's a doozy.

1. Cleveland Browns
*Josh Allen, QB, Wyoming

Cleveland has to take a quarterback. Has to. And a winless season means the Browns can pick whichever one they want. My evaluations on this quarterback class are really close. I've gone back and forth a few times on Josh Rosen, Sam Darnold and Allen, but I just moved Allen up to my No. 1 quarterback. His numbers aren't impressive, I know. But the NFL is all about projection, and he has a high ceiling. Coaches want to work with the 6-foot-5 Allen because he has all of the tools. I said last month that he is one of my favorite prospects in this class. The other top quarterbacks have warts, and there is no slam-dunk No. 1 prospect, which makes it a fun class. Scouts are looking forward to seeing Allen at the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama, next week, where he will work out with much better talent.

4. Cleveland Browns (from Houston Texans)
*Saquon Barkley, RB, Penn State

This is the pick acquired in the Texans' trade up for Deshaun Watson last year. Cleveland has a new front office, and Barkley could be the best overall player in this class -- he's No. 1 on my Big Board. But how much do teams value running backs? We've seen in recent years that they can hit on backs in the top 10 (Leonard Fournette, Ezekiel Elliott, Todd Gurley), but the Browns also have recent history missing on one (Trent Richardson, though they got a first-round pick in return). And there is always value in the middle rounds -- just look at Kareem Hunt and Alvin Kamara in 2017. Barkley is a big-time running back, and I think he'll be a top-10 pick. He is built for today's NFL as a do-it-all runner and pass-catcher out of the backfield.

Others of note: Rosen 2, Darnold 5, Fitzpatrick 6, Mayfield 13

I just don’t see it with Allen. Why would they take another project?

If they really want Allen, they could probably take two impact guys 1 and 4 and move up to the late first round with some of their others picks to take him in the 20s. I like Allen even less than the first two guys, and I don't like them a whole lot either.

It's Mel Kiper.

He has no sources, no inside information. He's the literal definition of nonsense.

I think I'm one of the few people on the planet who actually does see it with Allen but he's going to take a lot of work. If we don't get a veteran QB like Alex Smith who can start for at least a year if not two, taking him would be a waste.

He has all the traits you're looking for both physically and mentally IMO. The one trait I don't like is that he's kind of a gunslinger and likes to run a bit too much but you can coach that down a little.

If he's coachable (which he seems to be) and you can teach him consistent mechanics and footwork, he'll be a superstar. He tends to get really sloppy and that's where a lot of the inaccuracy comes from. But good Lord his supporting cast is awful. I watched a lot of their games and that team and offense are both terrible.

If that's the direction we go in though, I hope we get some extra picks for the trouble. Making a contrarian pick without getting paid to do it is not a good idea.

I'm with you here. IMO, the reason Allen is going number one right now is because it will make news now and it'll make news when he changes the pick later.

This.

This is the exact reason Allen is number one now. By the time he comes out with mock draft 47.3 Darnold or Allen will be #1.

If there’s one thing I know about quarterbacks, it’s that guys with shitty accuracy in college always improve dramatically in the pros :chuckle:

Not saying this is not true, just saying it makes no sense. National figure on ESPN for well over a decade should have developed inside sources.
