Sam Darnold Pro Day
To me, Darnold’s best throws are tops in the class. He has flashed very, very special throws to feel confident he can do it at the next level. I think he is the most clutch in the class and really does well in the red zone (15 TDs-1 INT).
I went back and charted Darnold’s 12 interceptions this year, and he definitely has work to do. His mechanical issues in the pocket are real. He’ll lean away on some throws and doesn’t shift his weight through the entirety of it. This leads to inaccuracy, but not necessarily turnovers every time. He usually does well putting the ball in spots only his WR can get. He is careless with the ball in the pocket and will carry it with one hand. This is a fixable issue.
However, a lot of his interceptions come down to bad decision making. He’s not alone in this regard for the QB’s, because Josh Rosen has a similar issue: Trying too much (Note: I realllly like Josh Rosen a lot and would be thrilled with him at #1). Both players will look for a big play rather than check down and live another play. It’s important to note that both players have missed reads that lead to interceptions. This will happen to the best QB’s and it’s their job to minimize how often.
The reason scout’s like Darnold so much is his total package: Accuracy, mobility with his body type, leadership/mentality. He has his issues, but he’s really a great prospect who will flourish after sitting for a little bit to work on his mechanics and how the NFL works. Would be a great fit behind Tyrod.
