2018 Minor League Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Can we expect a top farm system soon? Who are the potential superstars we can expect to see on the Indians over the next 3-4 years?

Don’t take this the wrong way, please. But read the thread some pages back and you’ll see why some of our more insightful posters really like a decent amount of prospects that we have throughout various levels of the system for a multitude of reasons.

There’s enough insight/numbers for you to formulate your own conclusions. It goes well beyond the most popular
prospects a la McKenzie, Mejia etc.

It’s been very informative, so that’s s why I say this — not trying to be a dick.

I have been reading and i appreciate the info. Liking a prospect and them projecting to be a superstar isn't the same to me. I guess i was more or less just looking for a couple names that project to be stars in a couple years.

From Fangraphs....

Cleveland has so many interesting athletes/bodies in the AZL that, even after prioritizing looks at them throughout extended spring training, I’m still running into new guys. RHP Carlos Vargas was last night’s star. This is a 6-foot-3, 180-pound righty who sat 93-96 all night, flashed a plus power slider in the mid-80s, and even got a swing and miss with a weird-looking power changeup. There’s much to be desired from a poise/mound-presence standpoint here, but that’s okay for now considering the kid is 18. Both of Vargas’s outings in the AZL have been abbreviated, so take the velocity with a grain of salt until we see what it looks like over five or more innings, every fifth day, for a whole summer. But also note that this stuff looks an awful lot like that of many of the high school arms who went in round one of the draft earlier this month and that scouts have told me they’ve seen Vargas throw harder this spring than he did yesterday. He has a deep, plunging arm action similar to Domingo German and Jonathan Loaisiga, who have each had injury issues. (I’ll get video up at some point today so you can see this guy.) From a stuff perspective, though, this is clearly a dude.

12 K's in 6 IP for Oviedo tonight.... yikes.

I know I said it last week but I'm gonna say it again, the talent level in the lower minors right now is fucking insane.

The DSL team is loaded.

Both AZL teams are loaded.

MV is loaded.

I just hope the organization gets the recognition for evaluation and development materializing — if it does. Underrated time to be a tribe fan if that could possibly make sense when the team is already really good.

1 month ago Francisco Mejia was hitting .178

He went 2-4 today to raise his average to .265

His numbers in June are absolutely ridiculous

From .178/.236/.276 to start the day on May 26th

to .277/.327/.435 after going 3/3 with a double, a home run, and a walk yesterday

.438/.462/.697 in 22 June games

Tyler Freeman is going to be really, really good.

Hit tool is radiating right now, but once he gets a bit older there is going to be some gap to gap power there. Plus plus kid, really dedicated to the game as well.

Those kids flourish in organizations like this. Think he winds up at 2B when its all said and done.

Has only struck out once in 47 PA

*swoons*

You guys are doing a good job with this section, no joke.

Agreed. Love this thread. I like being able to see others perspectives on guys in the minors who I’m not aware of. Keep up the good work everyone.

157 games into the professional career of Nolan Jones:

.281/.401/.430
-The hit/on base tool is there. The power is developing. He had 4 HR in his first 94 games, but had 9 already this season in just 63 games.

-Strikeouts are a concern. He has 184 of them, and his rate has actually gone up this year from last. However, he also has 108 walks.

-As a lanky 6'4 20 year old playing 3B with developing power, and good hitting/on base tools, I can't help but be excited about Nolan Jones. I think he could develop some big time power with his frame, but unless he cuts down on the strikeouts, it's tough to see him continuing to be a high average guy at the upper levels.

170 games into the professional career of Will Benson:

.206/.332/.410
-The power is there. He has 27 HR in these 170 games, and just turned 20.

-Even more so than Jones, the strikeouts are a concern. He has 230 in these 170 games. Almost frightening is that strikeout rate of 31% this year is actually the lowest of his 3 professional seasons.

-Also like Jones, he walks a lot, 101 so far, and a 16.6% walk rate this year, which is a career best. Unfortunately, a .228 BABIP this season is limiting him to just a .177/.328/.346 line.

-He does have 20 steals, but is just 3/8 this season. He a fast dude, but I don't expect it to translate to many stolen bases moving forward.

-When we drafted him, we knew he was raw. He's made a lot of strides toward being a more polished baseball player. The power alone will keep him moving through the system. Hopefully a little BABIP normalization will make his slash line a little easier to swallow by year's end.

So are we going to see Mejia anytime soon? 4 hits last night, which I believe marks his 17th multihit game this month
