Not necessarily true...as i've said before, a guy could be top-5 on every single big board and still slip to #8.
Don't know why I said always lol. Obviously it's not always, but like I said before, the 8th pick is kind of a no man's land on most drafts. GMS alot of the times take the safe pick, take the risky player that slipped, take the guy with great measurements or the crazy athletic guy that lacks basketball skills. In the history of the NBA, other than Andre Miller, the players drafted at 8th were just role players. Not one Star/Superstar.
What about Carter? Do you think he has a lot of Red Flags? We could go super safe and pick a guy with a good floor like him. If he is not there, Mikal Bridges will likely be there.
Carter is polarizing. I don't think he has red flags, I think that we have very little info of how good he is on defense. I feel like because Duke played strictly Zone, we have no clue how good he is defending in space. From the little I have seen he didn't look so good. He basically just camped inside the paint and deterred drivers on every defensive possession. I'm not sure how his rim protection is going to translate against NBA level athletes and size. His reach and his no step vert didn't look great to me. He does have pretty good timing on his blocks so there is that.
So if his rim protection doesn't translate, I really hope he is going to look good defending in space and the PnR because if not, it's going to be a problem. It's a real shame that coach K doesn't prepare his players and teach them things that are going to be crucial in the NBA.
Offensively, I feel like he is very diverse, but i'm not sure he is great in one particular skill. Isn't very explosive as a Roll Man, doesn't catch high lobs, takes too much time to gather and doesn't explode high off of two fit when he gathers, so he gets blocked a bit too much for my liking. I noticed that he doesn't get much seperation on his hooks as well, so I wonder how he is going to fare against NBA centers as one of his best traits is his post play. He is also a bit turnover prone in the post, but that's good as well as he tries to do a lot other than just score the ball. Very willing and even accurate passer from the post.
I like is his touch from mid range and even the 3. He shows good touch despite having a bit of a slow release...good shooting form as well. I like his potential as a screener. Takes good angles and knows how to position his body. I think he has good potential as an outside-inside threat...will be able to put the ball on the floor and attack closeouts. That's a huge trait in the NBA today. Projected to be a good rebounder, strong base...doesn't necessarily have a big rebounding radius though because he lacks reach and great no step very imo. So he basically uses his strength and size to push players off their spots...(You can see the difference when compared to Bagley) is it going to be there as a 5 in the NBA? Is he going to be a good offensive rebounder in the NBA? Duke's situation was unique...their twin tower setup caused a lot of mismatches so i'm not sure how good of a rebounder he is going to be at the next level as they played against midgets.
I'm really intrigued by Carter if he could play the 4. He has a big body and stretch ptoential and I feel like playing the 4 would allow him to dominate inside and from the outside as well. 4/5 hybrid completely changes things for me.
A big who is diverse, a good rebounder and has good vision, ability and willingess to pass usually end up pretty damn impactful. He is not a sexy pick and I'm not sure where we are headed with Bigs to be honest in the current landscape of the NBA. There are quite of a few intriguing wings around that range, so I still havn't really decided where I want to slot him. Like I said, there are alot of things I like and there are some things that make me take a step back. I'm still analyzing.
