2018 NFL SEASON Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Goff is balling tonight. 4 passing TDs in one half. Damn.

This Thursday night game is boring....too much offense. Where's the damn punters at? They need to earn a living too

Goff, throw after throw, is killing the Vikings.

Vikes may be some serious paper tigers.

Imagine thinking you actually need to establish the run after watching this Rams/Vikings game.

Things you don’t really need to do well in the current NFL to be successful.

1. Run the ball
2. Stop the run

It’s a passing league.

Outside of QB, the most important positions are still cornerback and pass rusher.

DL needs to get pressure without blitzing and the secondary needs to hold up reasonably well in man coverage.

Thursdays game was a shootout.
let not pretend the Rams cant throw down 200 rushing yards if they needed to.

Gurley is leading the NFL in Rushing.

Rams are top 10 in rushing yard as a team.. Minnesota Vikings 27th.

Who won the game?

Vikings are 1-2-1
Rams are 4-0

I don't get these hot takes.

Only way Vikings get it together for a run this season is to get their run game in order.

ultimately teams strive for balance but if an opposing team has a weakness opposing teams will exploit it.

KC hasn't needed to run yet. but they have a run game in their pocket if they need and are still getting 100+ yards rushing game.

Minnesota is also allowing its opponent to score on 45.7% of their drives after 4 games.

That is not a winning formula.

Of course you don't have to establish the run when the best team in football sees their young QB have his best day as a pro. However, you need to establish the run when everything isn't perfect. Shanahan in San Francisco was planning to unleash the fury with Handsome Jimmy and a pass catching back, but now due to a few injuries he is going to protect Beathard with a more conservative approach.

The Cowboys consistently have established the run so far this season. They are 7th in rushing (including the Rams with one extra game). However they are 30th in overall offense and 31st in points scored with a premier RB.

In the year 2018, you're costing yourself points and wins by trying to establish the run.

Uh the cowboys offense is broken and it starts with the offensive line.

lets look at last years top offensive running games
Jacksonville 10-6- Won Division
Dallas 9-7
Philadelphia 13-3- Won Division
Carolina 11-5
New Orleans 11-5 Won Division
Buffalo 9-7
Minnesota 13-3 Won Division
LArams 11-5 Won Division
Kansas City 10-6 Won division
Patriots 13-3 Won Division

Only team not on this list to win their division was Pittsburgh.
Pittsburgh was 5th in overall defense, 5th against the pass and 10th against the run by total yards

lets not forget Pittsburgh lost their playoff game against Jacksonville giving up 148 rushing yards on 35 carries

Meanwhile Jacksonville only got 264 yards in the air.

This is a passing league but the running game will always be important to sustained success.

and you want to keep your opponents from scoring less than 33% on their drives regardless if your opponent bothers to establish the run or not.

What are the numbers you are using for this, total rushing yards?

Not necessarily. If you want an ideal situation, you are correct. The Rams are a flawless offense right now, so what you have described is perfect for me and them. However, let's examine the Cowboys more carefully: Dak Prescott is a limited passer. He is at his best running play action, read options off of the threat of Zeke's talent, and bootlegs. They have a bad receiving and tight end corp compared to the rest of the NFL. I feel like the discussion is like a few people saying boxers should focus on uppercuts because that is the most effective punch, but the reality of a boxing match is a combination of skills to avoid being predictable.

The average completion gains more yards than the average rush.

Nothing groundbreaking with that statement. Otto Graham would have agreed with you sixty years ago. Again it seems like you and a few others are saying a scheme built around a passing offense with the right personnel running it is the most effective offense. I agree. Even the best teams need to find ways to keep the defense honest or else they are the Lions. If there are injuries to key players or a lack of talent? Then the element of keeping the defense guessing becomes even more vital.

considering all these teams averaged rushing 115 yards per game does it matter?

Noone here is advocating three yards and a cloud of dust but to say the Run game isn't important. is just an oversimplification.

Carolina had one of the worst passing offenses in the NFL last season and made the playoffs.

Tampa Bay and San Francisco both had productive passing offenses and sported losing records

You just cant use Dallas Starting out as 1-2 as proof that the Running game isn't important.
