2018 Trade Deadline

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
This is probably a dumb question, but why wouldn't the playoff contender with the worst record just make a claim for every significant player that is placed on waivers just to block the other teams from getting that player even if they have no intention of trading for that player?

There isn't anything stopping them from doing it and I bet it has been done a few times, but I think it's more of a gentleman's agreement you don't actually put a claim on a guy unless you need/want them for your roster.

Because if a deal isn't made, the player goes back on waivers and then they go to the next team that claims for free, if I understand everything correctly.

Super hypothetical here, but say the only teams that made a claim on Bryce Harper were the Pirates, an extremely, extremely fringe playoff team at this point that would need a miracle, and the Brewers.

If the Pirates claimed just to try to block their divisional rival Brewers from getting him, but then didn't make a trade, the Brewers would be next in line to claim him and they'd get him without giving up anything.

I think that's how it works at least, but there's definitely a reason.

If we can’t snag anyone, I can’t wait for fans to say we blew it and never tried to even get an OF or another bullpen arm. If you think the Indians are that stupid where they are just sitting on their hands. I feel sorry for you.
I don't think anyone with a brain would argue this.

2016: Miller, attempted for Lucroy, Guyer, Coco Crisp

2017: Smith, outbid the Yankees for Bruce

2018: Hand, Cimber, Martin, and still to come.

If the Indians don't get nothing done, then Lonnie will be in the mix for a return I'm sure. The Melk-man is also advertising what he can do in this Boston series. The Indians might just stay put and loyal to using Melky.

I'm unclear on this, and I thought of this as well. Let's say hypothetically Adam Jones and Andrew McCutchen hit waivers on the same day. If you make a claim on Jones and are awarded the claim, I would guess you would then be sent "to the back of the line" like in a fantasy football league continual rolling waiver system. I do believe it resets every day based on reverse standings though.

Not quite true. The Dodgers claimed Harper and both teams couldn't agree to a deal. Harper goes back to the Nats and they do not have to put him on waivers again. And they will not, because if they do, any team that claimed Harper would be given Harper and the Nats would get nothing in return except salary relief.

Thanks, but wouldn't that provide an even greater incentive for a team to try to block?

Hypo: Angels put up Trout. Indians can't afford Trout, but they don't want the Astros to get him, so they make a waiver claim and no deal is made. But the Angels wouldn't put Trout through waivers again, otherwise they'd give him to the Yankees for free.

I honestly would not have an issue if we did not make a move .. these moves do not happen in a vacuum ... Players come in and others have to leave ... Who do you bench or trade or release .

Well that being said, Naquin, Zimmer, Merryweather are all out for the year, so we don't have to release anyone from the 40 man roster to add a player since we can move them to the 60 day DL. Guys like Allen, Diaz can be sent down to add the new player and brought up September 1st since you can expand the roster. So it would really only effect who is making the playoff roster and nothing else. So honestly we won't have to release anyone to add anyone.

We aren't just going to make a move to make a move either. If the move doesn't make this team better then we will stay put. Probably Allen and/Or Diaz gets sent down when we acquire someone and will be called back up Sept 1. It really won't have anything but a positive effect on this team as long as we get a player who isn't a headcase and willing to do the role Francona gives them.

Who has been saying this? Anyone here? Because I really haven't seen it at all.

I've been hard on this franchise and front office for awhile. But over the last few seasons, they've stepped it up like crazy. That Andrew Miller trade took massive balls, and from that moment on I wasn't going to bitch and complain about the front office anymore. I'm just going to let them work.

No doubt they tried to make a few moves before the deadline. And I see no reason why they won't do the same now for the waiver deadline. It's a bummer the few guys we would really like are out in the NL though. Dodgers can, and likely will be a bag of dicks and stop the Tribe from getting a guy like Andrew McCutchen.

Here's hoping they don't, and Cutch is here in a day or two..

They will be trying to make a move, at least one more bat and maybe a bullpen arm before the 31st. I don't think anyone should be mad even if we don't make a move cause of the fact we did a fair amount at the trade deadline. It just doesn't look as great as we were hoping since Martin got super sick and Mercado is a long term piece rather than now. Hand and Cimber though looks like a very good move short term on our part.

I think we all know now the organization is doing its best to try and win now, but also be smart and getting guys like Mercado for the long term potential as well. People who have an issue with this organization right now always will find something wrong to complain about.

Depending on the player I cannot see where they help more than Allen and Diaz and who the hell is Merryweather
