2019 Cavs

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Tristan Thompson. I don't like his game, I don't like his contract, but he's also never been a real "cancer." I'd certainly assess his value around the league, but with what he's owed over the next two years, you're likely better off keeping him as a veteran and shopping him next year as an expiring. He won't be a problem. Generally, he's a pretty hard worker.

Agree with most everything youve outlined (though some fairy tale part of me still wishes we could just keep Love and magically turn it around with him).

The above part though. I was initially thinking the same, because TT is a young vet, with a solid work ethic, who has also been here long enough to take the young guys around and be the local vet. Thats a package that makes it worth to wait for his expiring deal to become a real asset.

But now that we signed Channing I actually think trading TT is pretty important. We cant have Zizic, Nance, Love, Frye and TT all trying to get minutes, its too crowded.

I guess keeping him with the intention of trading Love at the deadline makes sense, but I dont think that is something the front office has circled right now as the definite plan going forward.

I believe you have to treat Zizic the same as Cedi and Sexton. Go all in with his development instead of half assing it with guys like TT getting minutes ahead of him.

Well, in my mind, Thompson shouldn’t be getting much burn. Of course, Frye is likely only playing spot minutes.

Zizic and Nance are the priority of the front court. As mentioned, Love has to be dealt at some point.

All strategies are a means to something.

Do we want to be a competitive playoff team in the east?

Then we can probably keep everyone, leverage Gilbert’s deep pockets and just add to this current group.

Do we want to win another nba title some time? Then we need to tank.

Do we want to be the Orlando Magic? Then we basically do nothing and we’re the magic which is the worst possible idea-a team permanently stuck between tanking and spend money trying to contend.

Bottom line-be decisive-tank with all your heart(my idea) or rebuild on the fly with all your heart-but don’t straddle the line....

I like Keeping Love and going for FA. We keep being told that you can't get FA to come here, but really we can't get free agents to come play with Lebron, and Neither can LA. If we try to sell Jimmy Butler or Kawhi as our #1 guy that is better than getting a top 10 pick. Maybe Lebron is scaring people off more than we thought

The Cavs simply can't leverage Dan's pockets again at the moment though. We need to get out of the repeater tax now that LeBron is gone and we are no longer a title contender. That should be step one. That way we can properly leverage Dan's wallet for the next time we have a chance to be a competitive team. Need to push that financial reset button no matter what. You can't pay the tax for a team rebuilding on the fly. That's not sure. Only if you're a title contender.

Again, the marginal benefits of becoming 1st round cannon fodder for the Celtics are drastically outweighed by those of having a top 10 pick...even if you use the "buh week draff!" adjustment that seems to be making the rounds, and is always difficult to predict.

We need to build for a few years down the line, where our 3 top-10 picks will mature and the Celts/Sixers may well price themselves out of some of their cores. Who knows, we may even get the hometown hero back again for his last act.

Gonna need to have Young Bull send an Instagram to LeBron that say fit in not out if that happens

You don't need to tank, you just need to know good talent in the draft and take the player, and match skill sets/personalities properly. The Magic stink because they would either miss on drafting the right player, or match the right player with the wrong cast.

It's telling that a better run organization is making a strong go of it with the player Orlando drafted #2 overall.

Our first go-around of tanking for high picks was on the verge of netting next to nothing, even with Kyrie Irving re-signed. We were still a 33 win team with nothing more than a handful of former scratch tickets. Not every franchise player is taken in the top 3. Leonard, Wade, Bosh, George, Westbrook, Curry all taken 4 or later.

Lakers just tanked since 2013/14 season: Julius Randle (I guess.. maybe Saric was the pick?), D'Angelo Russell (instead of Zingas), Brandon Ingrahm (ok, maybe Brown was the pick), Lonzo Ball (somehow Magic was bullied by Lavar into taking his son when Tatum was the BPA). Lucky for them, like us, Lebron has arrived to clean up the sins of the past.

Just be smart, there will be seasons where you are naturally bad, take advantage of the picks you have then, make smart choices etc.. no need to force a tank if you have good player evaluation.

I could see us tanking in 2010 because we had nothing
This time with sexton, cedi, zizic, nance, clarkson and probably hood we are in much better shape

Do we tank by not playing the best players the most minutes.

Try to win every game and Work to make the team better for now and the future. Love, Korver, JR, Hill, TT should all be moved in deals that make us better and bolster the young core.

I like Love and would love to see sexton play with him, nance, cedi etc...sexton will look even better. But I do not see us being a true contender in 2-3 years with love on the team

Not trading those guys to tank, trading them to make the team better, younger. Want back young potential, controllable talent and/or picks

I just wanted to focus on that one point.
The Cavs are as guilty of this as any other team is.
The previous GM's failed to draft the BPA or really identify what the team needed.
When was the last time they drafted a player who had outstanding defensive skills?
It's always been a player who has good shooting skills but little else .
Or if they do find a player who has multi skills they traded him away.

after Irving:
TT, Dion, Zeller, Canadian Bacon, Wiggins.
Once James came back, they added vets who could shoot because, well, the patented Lebron formula is James and 3-D, we just got more 3's than D.

Grant was awful at drafting. He hung his hat on acquiring draft assets but executed it poorly. Griffin never got painted with that brush, but he was part of the team who helped find gems like Bennett and Neon Dion. Hopefully Altman has what it takes, but I'd remain skeptical until truly proven otherwise.

Yeah, that's fine.

Trade Love in the right deal. Not just any deal though. Younger with purpose, not younger just because you want to get younger. Sometimes it's better for your GM to not deal if only to send a message to other teams about what is acceptable.

Guess we don't see another game until October :ambivalence::fatigue:
Counting the days already can't wait.
