2019 Potential Free Agency Targets

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Sure.... he only got Dede Westbrook to New York for a Heisman trophy.

Although I do agree with your entire post in terms of cost/benefit with OBJ.

And the next year, Baker was better, more efficient, by spreading the ball around.

I entirely agree that Baker spreads it around based on matchups and play design.

However, I used that example to show that he can get the ball to a playmaker if he has one.

The team was better his senior year as a whole.

I don’t think he’d be worth the potential price tag, but Baker likes to throw the ball down the field... and OBJ is great at winning his matchups down the field.

I just think that very soon we'll have to start that next level thinking. We reached that point with the Indians and Cavs - no longer was making the playoffs and generally being a winning team enough.

We're gonna reach that with the Browns and if we're gonna compete with teams like the Chiefs and their incredible arsenal of offensive weapons in the playoffs then we're gonna need a lot more than what we have now. Even the Texans have a premiere weapon on offense that is better than anything we have. They're gonna be another AFC team we'll have to compete with.

I'd try like hell to get OBJ and a 1st round pick in a single draft (especially if it's a mid 1st rounder) + a couple additional later round picks is worth it to me. If he isn't that guy for you then fine but the simple argument that "Baker spreads the ball around so we don't need elite pass catchers" is very shortsighted and not a good argument at all, IMO.

The only worry that comes with OBJ is his attitude, IMO. He isn't going to get those $tat$ on our team.

Yes, Baker has a knack for finding the open guy and likely doesn't need a "go-to-guy", but god damn OBJ would make it so much easier for Baker to find more open guys due to the attention he demands.

When you have a chance to pair a gamer QB with a gamer WR, you do it.

And that's certainly a valid point.

But, we have Landry and ODB's college WR coach already. If we keep Kitchens, good chance we keep the wr coach too. I think this would help.

For those suggesting OBJ, how many teams can afford to run a cap sheet with 2 WRs making that kind of money?

OBJ makes $18M on average (highest paid WR), while Landry is expected to make $15.1M on average (5th highest paid WR). That would be what, 18% or so of the total cap?

If a bonafide WR1 is what you would think Baker needs, I would rather draft one, and take advantage of the cap advantage of having a WR1 and QB1 on rookie contracts. This gives you the ability to pay for more talent on the D-Line or the Secondary.

Wasting a ton of breath on a guy who doesn’t appear to be available.
I know, what kind of sports message board allows any sort of mindless speculation about their favorite sports teams.

Then let's discuss some potential players we could acquire via trade. I haven't kept my ear to the disgruntled player crap this year.

I do feel OBJ is a big-market type guy so I know that it isn't realistic but at least we have established ties to him which isn't the case for every other team.

Just like LeBron, Baker's personality and the general publics love of the perennial loser Browns and its fans would make Cleveland a big market. We will be max on prime time and have a ton of bandwagon fans.

The reason we don't get OBJ is because he isn't available. The reason we shouldn't even try is because he will be to expensive for the return we get from him.

Maybe we can start a thread on if we'd like LeBron on the Cavs.

And when there were rumblings around LeBron to the Cavs, we had one.

Now that there are rumblign ODB could be dealt, we're talking about him in a thread about players the Browns could get.

Not sure what's wrong with discussing it. To boot, it's opened up some conversation on what our WR corp could use in general. Why shut down meaningful conversation?

Funchess is a guy I am still keeping tabs on - big bodied, possession guy seems like a need still. We don't necessarily need a star-quality WR considering the production we've got out of guys on this squad but Funchess would immediately become our second best receiver if he was added in the off-season.

I am just worried what he thinks he is worth.

What I do not want to see is an overpay for a boarder line second receiver, hoping he can perform like a number one receiver. A good model for what the Browns can do is when Robert Woods left Buffalo for the Rams. Los Angeles saw that Woods wasn't used properly in Buffalo and his numbers didn't reflect his talent *COUGH Tyrod Taylor * so he got about four million a year. His numbers in a better offense with a better QB now reflect a number one receiving option at a fair price.
