2019 Potential Free Agency Targets

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Funchess is a guy I am still keeping tabs on - big bodied, possession guy seems like a need still. We don't necessarily need a star-quality WR considering the production we've got out of guys on this squad but Funchess would immediately become our second best receiver if he was added in the off-season.

I am just worried what he thinks he is worth.
Well, this season has certainly brought the price tag down, that's for sure.

I realize that Funchess is a big bodied receiver and that there is certainly a need for an X to create matchup problems for Callaway or Landry.

But Funchess has not been good at all.

I'm far more inclined to dive into a stellar WR draft and pull out a player who can provide a much higher ceiling and grow along with Mayfield.

Yep, no room on the payroll for a Dwayne Bowe/Kenny Britt redo. For a receiver who has uneven results so far, I'd rather reach in the draft than overpay in free agency.

I am not sure Funchess would become our 2nd best WR.

Perriman, Calloway and Higgins are all on about the same level.

Funchess is a big receiver for sure, but he is at about a 50% target to catch guy, although he has a less accurate qb throwing to him.

I was thinking we should get a big bodied receiver to help Baker, but I started thinking what is different between Funchess and lets say Njoku? Well, Njoku is bigger, was faster at the combine and can jump higher. Why not split Njoku out wide some and get ourselves another fast TE? Since DeValve hasn't been the answer as a 2nd receiving TE, why not target that instead of a mediocre at best Funchess who is about to get over paid.

Like I said above, I rather get a 2nd tight end with speed ala Gronk and Hernandez, although hopefully not a murdering piece of shit.

I'm with that.

TJ Hockenson from Iowa
Kaden Smith from Stanford

Well, to be fair, Cam can't throw the ball this year, so no one in the Carolina offense has been terribly good or consistent aside from McCaffrey, who has benefited from all the check downs.

I really haven't begun to look at the draft yet, which is weird as a Browns fan and at this point in the season.

I figured you had, what rounds are those guys looking at if the draft were today? Don't need another 1st round TE, Njoku is becoming a stud, just a solid one that can push the receivers for snaps.

Glad you brought that up. While Funchess is having a down year compared to last, it's safe to say Cam hasn't been healthy all year. They just shut him down for the rest of the season.

Yeah, having a good downfield threat doesn't do much for you if your QB can't throw downfield.

Probably the second or third on those guys.

Some really good, freakish athletes coming into the league this year at the position.

Hockenson is probably the best tight end blocker I've seen since George Kittle, who I also wanted desperately in the middle rounds.

Pairing him with Njoku would be very nice.

Yeah, I'm not that big on Funchess. Outside one season, he's really not shown much at all...

But, if you can get him dirt cheap... Sure, you keep it an option. But I personally hope we bring in someone, whether its via draft or free agency, that's better.

I'm very hopeful some underclassmen declare for the draft at the receiver position. There are some dynomite juniors and sophomores who could really strengthen the depth. If not, I want to see how well JJ Arcega-Whiteside of Stanford runs at the combine. His production and ability to catch 50/50 balls is without question.

Agreed, also keep an eye on N'Keal Harry. He has all the measurables to be a good one.

For those suggesting OBJ, how many teams can afford to run a cap sheet with 2 WRs making that kind of money?

OBJ makes $18M on average (highest paid WR), while Landry is expected to make $15.1M on average (5th highest paid WR). That would be what, 18% or so of the total cap?

If a bonafide WR1 is what you would think Baker needs, I would rather draft one, and take advantage of the cap advantage of having a WR1 and QB1 on rookie contracts. This gives you the ability to pay for more talent on the D-Line or the Secondary.

We could absolutely afford to do this for about 3 years then when everyone needs a new contract we would be screwed.
