2020 NFL Draft - Pick #44 - Grant Delpit, S, LSU

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Both.

I think Delpit is dumb. He is a massive liability in coverage. He is playing incredibly poorly, and he's responsible for a lot of the mistakes he is making.

I also think that we can use him in different roles. He's actually looked really good blitzing or attacking specific gaps in run fits.

A good coaching environment identifies the things that young players do well, and asks them to do those things. Then they start to slowly add more responsibilities to the player's plate.

I haven't seen that with Delpit.
Yeah, Delpit was at his best last year flying in like a missile and lighting someone up at the LOS. Unfortunately, it seems like all our safeties thrive at that and none are particularly strong in coverage.

So I didn't watch the full video but did skip around to see the plays that the YouTuber highlighted

All the plays- other than the 2 INTs- were Delpit making plays at or near the LOS. Definitely think he thrives there, but his coverage is still shaky at times.

Hope he continues to improve.

His last few games have been incredibly good. He's shown to be a super aggressive, instinctual and athletic S he showed in his draft year. Looks like it's starting to come together, and come together quick.

I think they've been playing him where he should have been all along. As an in the box safety.

It's paying massive dividends.

You say that, but he made two INTs the last game playing deep.

He's just been better and more instinctive. Is it being more clear with his role? Improved communication? Not sure, whatever it is, he's played super well.

Delpit made a ton of costly mistakes getting used to his NFL role this year, but he is figuring it out. Going forward he is capable of split safety duties, not just box safety. That's why he went midway through the second round.

This is a young defense with a lot of guys on rookie contracts thrust into roles they may not have been ready to take. Delpit lost a year and a half on the field recovering from a torn achilles, he may as well be a second year guy.

Don't look now, but RCF's red-headed stepchild Grant Delpit has been playing better as well. Even JJ3 looked better out there.

I'm cautiously optimistic that our on-field talent isn't dumb as rocks, and that replacing Woods unlocks this defense's ability to be consistently good.
:detective:

If we get a defensive coaching staff that can clearly communicate roles, I'm still excited for what this talented secondary can do.

for an in the box safety Delpit has been the main if not the entire source of multiple gash runs this year because of horrendous angles as the last line of defense

He’s had some promising games, but I’m not jumping the gun on it. He was not even playing like he deserved a spot on the 53 for the majority of the season. He needs to string together more before I’m at all confident in him long term

He’s good close to LOS, and he’s good deep.

It’s the middle where he suffered, and it’s for the reasons everyone thought he’d fail- bad hips. He’s athletic enough to hide it.

They’ve been considerably better seemingly swapping JJ3 and him on coverage duty.

But also? Bell over Harrison really stands out on just plugging a small hole that helps the bigger hole.

It's incredibly rare for a player to miss his rookie year due to injury and still succeed in the NFL.

Whether it was Delpit needing to learn, Woods's scheme being a problem, or a mix of both, he really came on in the second half of last year and continued it today.

I loved the pick when we made it--and I'm glad to see it paying off. In the post-game interview, Denzel said they want to get the ENTIRE secondary to the pro bowl. If they play like they did today, they just might.

I texted a group thread today, "remember when Browns fans wanted to Fire Berry over this pick and run Delpit off the team." Lol
He had a great game today...

A torn Achilles is about as rough of an injury for a defensive back as you can imagine. We talked about it so much when Varejao popped his and he was never the same. It's the injury that moved Hall of Famer Rod Woodson from cornerback to free safety.

I think we are finally seeing Delpit as a finished product both physically and mentally right now.

My least favorite Berry picks have been, in no particular order:
  1. Jordan Elliott
  2. Harrison Bryant
  3. Anthony Schwartz
  4. Alex Wright
  5. David Bell
  6. Cade York
Ok, fuck "no order"--York is #1 with a bullet. Alex Wright and Jordan Elliott are next.

I was ready to write every single one of them off.... but then Jordan Elliott went out and played pretty solid football today.

I'm glad someone else said it.

Elliott looked really good today. Maybe just a factor of playing with 3 other studs on the line, but he was solid today for sure.
