2023-2024 Cleveland Guardians Offseason Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Yeah I'm gonna go ahead and call bs on the "bad luck". When you don't hit the ball hard you don't have "good luck". He's a damn fine leadoff hitter so I'm good with him in LF if CF and RF have a good amount of power. Like I said in the prior post, I'd have him as my LFer, but if somebody come offering a haul I'd move him. Small ball is for pussies.

Thats stats say bad luck... Look at his numbers... He got adjusted on, so he needs to make that adjustment back, so let's see what he does... I think he will be better in 24 than he was previously...

I found some fascinating information on Kwan.
If you're on Baseball-Reference, and you go down far enough you will find a column titled "Similar Batters".
When I looked at it for Kwan, most of the names weren't too familiar to me. When I checked, most of these players were born in the 19th and played in the very early 20th century.
I don't know what that means, but it is what it is. Here's the list:

Similarity Scores

Similar Batters
  1. Harry Kenyon (972.1)
  2. Jesse Hill (972.1)
  3. Lou Novikoff (971.6)
  4. Al Scheer (970.4)
  5. Guy Curtright (970.3)
  6. Harry McCormick (969.2)
  7. Hal Peck (967.9)
  8. Russ Scarritt (967.7)
  9. Buster Mills (966.5)
  10. Tike Redman (966.3)

It means that once players figured out how to hit the ball over the fence in about 1920, guys like Steven Kwan became less relevant to a major league lineup.

I think it means Kwan is actually 123 years old, just looks very youthful for his advanced age...hence, no power.

Kwan is not the problem and never will be.

He gets to the sweet spot at far too high of a clip to never generate more pop too. It will come, but not to 20+ HR levels. But for now he is at the mercy of BABIP luck year-over-year, because as mentioned by CDAV, he does not hit the ball hard enough to see consistent year-over-year BABIP numbers.

Literally the only difference between last year and his rookie season is a .323 BABIP vs a .294 BABIP. Add .29 to his OBP and .29 at a minimum to his SLG and we're looking at a .768 OPS, vs .772 as a rookie.
