2023-24 Season | Game #33 | Cavs @ Raptors | Jan. 1, 2024 | 7:30 p.m.

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
The problem as I see it is that Mitchell likes playing the way he does, and believes in it. A stricter coach with the backing of the FO, who benches him if he doesn't play the way the coach wants, almost certainly would result in Mitchell not signing a long-term deal here, and going somewhere else where he feels his talents will be more appreciated.

The alternative scenario is that Mitchell suddenly "wakes up", and decides that the way he has played ball his entire life isn't conducive to winning. I think that is unlikely in the extreme. The only scenario where it might be remotely possible is if he was playing second fiddle to a veteran player who was an even bigger star. Like, Prime LBJ/Jokic/Giannis/Embiid level.

But that isn't going to happen here.
I think Mitchell is told he has the green light to take over whenever the ball movement offense falters, gives up lots of turnovers, or when all our other shooters are just ice cold. I think Garland and LeVert are told the same thing. And I think all 3 guys are more than happy to oblige. On top of that I think the ISO is dictated from the sidelines in every critical situation where we really need a bucket, and there is no plan or intention to try to pass the ball around to get the best look.

Very few coaches (can count them on one hand without using all five fingers) have the street cred to bench stars.

Why would someone be benched for doing what they're asked and expected to do?

I think he might be responding to The Human Qtip post about benching DM so he wouldn't want to sign an extension. And I believe the latter is a whole hellava lot more likely than the former.

He is this boards biggest Don hater lol.

Siakam got 36 points with Wade and Niang guarding him most of the time. He averages under 22. We needed Mobley.

Barrett just takes the ball and dribbles straight to the rim, running over anybody who is in front of him. He gets the call because the defenders are backpedaling. They need to set their feet and take the charge.
When Wade & Allen were in, Allen matched up mostly with Siakim while Wade checked Poeltl. I thought it was odd at the time, but I think we were trying to get Allen’s length on him. It kind of worked in that it pushed him to the perimeter - where he inexplicably turned into the lost Curry brother. But no doubt, Mobley is the perfect cover for a guy like Siakim.

Mitchell was a 20+ FGA guy in Utah the last two seasons before he came here. His game looks no different to me at all. So either both coaches coached him exactly the same way...or that's just who he is as a player.

Is it possible that Mitchell is only doing what JBB tells him? Sure, if you assume JBB tells him to take long contested threes early in the game, and early in the shot clock. We've all seen it. Or if he's told to put on blinders, ignore his teammates, and just drive to the hoop whether the shot is there or not.

Now he obviously isn't doing that every possession, but given that no coach would ever tell a player to do either of those things, you've got to assume that some of this is just Mitchell himself.

Worth noting that Harden last season (contract year) cut back on shots and scoring and lead the league in APG. In his mind that cost him an All Star appearance and hurt his contract negotiation position. Those are both reasonable assumptions.

The lesson he learned is that sacrificing your numbers for team benefit is a sucker’s game.

Mitchell got the all star appearance and second team all nba. Why would he change his game?

He has shown he can pass from time to time. The other issue is he operates best with room to drive which is tough when Garland likes to do that as well and Mobley and Allen are purely inside scoring threats.

Strus helps some but he’s not even a 15 pts / 36 guy. Neither is Niang.

It’s not we have prime offensive options in the frontcourt.

It's called a green light, where the HC tells the player to be his best self, play his game his way, yata yata. I'd wager JBB tells Mitchell, Garland and LeVert to do this at certain points of the game and JBB plans on living with the results for better or worse. Then perhaps they critique how it went when they review the game videos. Maybe they don't even do this much. I think they're sold that this is how to win.

I think the team practiced running a motion offense a lot in the pre season, and I'm sure they all understand what to do. But the 2015 Golden State Warriors aren't showing up wearing Cavs uniforms anytime soon. They appear to run it early in games, and for as long as it seems to be effective. Other parts of games they go P&R heavy, mix in some ISO, some various 2 man plays, some back door cuts, sometimes they even feed the post and see what happens. I think it's good to use all these strategies depending on how we're being defended. The devil is knowing the most effective way to attack and then execute it with everyone being on the same page. But this Cavs team, once they go away from a motion offense in a game, they never seem to go back to it.

And when push comes to shove and we really need a bucket, you can bet they'll spread the floor and either Mitchell, Garland, or LeVert will be out by the center circle dribbling the air out of the ball, surveying the court, only to try to beat their defender off a dribble drive, or pull up for a three like prime time Jordan or Lebron. You can't tell me this isn't the plan and the design, because they pretty much do it every time in those situations.

I personally hate it and for the life of me I don't understand why they don't move the defense with some passes and player movement but the best you get is maybe a screen. I assume they're afraid of making a turnover off a bad pass. Crunch time is ISO time whether it's Mitchell, Garland or LeVert.

Guys in the NBA notice stuff like what happened with Harden
