2023 Season | Series #43 | Guardians @ Twins | Aug. 28-30, 2023

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Really depends on the player, but to me there's a world of difference between an Arias who hits the ball 65% of the time and a Bo Naylor who hits the ball 80% of the time (maybe will go down when the league adjusts but hey this is something we never saw from Arias).

Will Arias be better than someone like Freeman? Who the hell knows but one is just more exciting to people. Dreams do not often turn into reality though.

Absolutely.

Bo is going to be a stud, no debating that.

But contact rate goes up with age. Unless you think this is Arias at his final version, this is all just speculation. But quality of contact can often be a predictor of success as a hitter.

He's even got his own store now! :celb (4):

Fucking Kole Calhoun. Balls of steel to swing at that 3-0 pitch.

He's the real Amed Rosario. Clubhouse leader AND performer.

I want to win the Central so badly now. Don't care how quick we get out of the postseason, but just for the experience.

Bring Coach Calhoun back next year and ride him into sunset this season. Likeable as fuck dude

You keep saying that and I'm sure that's true, but doesn't this also apply to power? Under 25 players usually improve on all 3 parts of their slash line with age, no?

IOW, contact guys add power and power prospects add contact. Now what?

And how are you working for the Guardians being such a power Stan? Serious question. If the org mantra through the system is contact and speed (look at Lynchburg lineup), how do you fit in?

Power improves slower. It’s also the trait with more variance. Power peaks at age 31 on average. Contact at age 27 on average.

Standard deviation on power increases is much higher than contact increases.

It’s a safer bet to say a guy will increase their contact rates than their power production.

And I’m not touching that last one. You know better.

Even if you disregard the challenge, the assumption that every single person in the organization, top-down, is a monolith with one thought AND that thought is something as dumb as "power bad" is... whew, that's something.

I’m not even a power stan in here.

Big fan of the bat to ball guys being brought it at all levels with like no current power, have been saying so for years. My 3 favorite hitting prospects in the system have all of like 16 HRs combined this year so far.

Those are the guys who have the best chances of being one of the outliers that affect the standard deviation of power development and develop it quickly and at a high level, like Lindor and Josey. But they also could be Myles Straw, Whit Merrifield, etc. for their entire career and the power never comes.

Also, if the entire organization doesn’t think the team needs more power and prefers contact rate above all else, explain the off-season additions.

And nobody said that.

Contact and Power have been two poles in baseball scouting since day one. It's pretty obvious that the org tries to develop as many contact bats in hope to squeeze out the power with age, so they're contact over power, at least in their IFA and draft acquisitions and as development team

Guardians win in extra innings!
