Question.
If Manzardo is as good as we believe he is and as ready as we think he is that he will be up in 2024, which I believe everyone agrees he will be, is it worthwhile to bring him up a month or so later, watch him go off, and he still is given a full year of service time?
That’s the risk you are taking by not opening up the season with him. Manipulating his service time only to lose that team control anyways for less than a full seasons worth of production.
The new rules have made it harder for position players, especially highly regarded prospects on the cusp of breaking in already, to have their service time manipulated because teams are afraid of losing out on a full year for only 3/4ths or 2/3rds of a season, so they’re just getting the full year off the rip.
Manzardo is the first guy we’ve had with a legit chance to qualify for the draft pick compensation should he make the Opening Day roster. He’s going to be given a legit chance to make the roster out of the gates, regardless of his rule 5 status. Why do you think we traded Bell after acquiring him?
