A few thoughts...
1) The decision to attempt a safety squeeze in that situation with that personnel was a bone head move by Vogt, if indeed it was truly his decision.
Runners on the corners with no outs, and the top of the order coming up.
A K or pop up doesn't hurt. A GIDP gives us the lead. A sac fly gives us the lead. A throw out at the plate leaves a RISP. Just about the only thing that would really hurt was what happened.
2) Having said that, in game decisions aren't the true measurement of a manager. Its how he manages for a 162 game season, and Vogt is obviously very focused on 162 games.
3) The lineup card isn't totally in Vogts hand. The FO is openly focused on giving tryouts to several players, even if it means hurting the chances of winning. Guys like Florial and Arias are gonna get their shots, even if they aren't the best options.
4) Eli and Barlow have been solid, not great, relievers for years. Four games into a season is not nearly long enough to make definitive opinions on them.
5) No matter what anyone says, the Powers That Be are treating TMac with kid gloves. They are gonna protect him as much as possible in the early part of the season. Doing otherwise would be malfeasance. He and Bieber alone could power this team to a division title. Thats why he was ramped up so slowly, and thats why he is pitching in the fifth spot.
Besides, the rotational order is only a big deal for a few weeks. Whats the difference in June whether an opponent is facing Bieber-TMac or TMac-Bieber? And in July the rotation will be reset after the break.
Heck, we might not even have a rotation by then.
