A Closer Look at Jared Sullinger

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Outside of Irving, these other prospects like Sullinger are nice players but they are all far from sure things and hard to project as the type of talent you can build a franchise with.
With Sullinger you may end up with an Elton Brand level player which is fine but you'll then need a lot more to become a championship level team.

I think in a draft class like this, Elton Brand with seemingly a better head on his shoulders is exactly what we should be looking for (if Irving is gone). With the 2012 draft and then 2013 draft with Drummond, we could be looking at 3-5 possible superstars compared to 1 in this draft. I'd rather get a solid player now with less of a chance of being a bust.

I might be the only one, I would be happy not getting a "sure thing" in the next draft. I want to stockpile young talent and even guys who might be projects. This should allow us to not improve too much too soon so we can get at least 1-2 more years of lotto picks.

JJ, Manny, AV, Boobie, 2-3 lotto picks, Eyenga and Kahn could work well in 3-5 years (assuming AV stays)-

My dream scenario would be Irving this season, next draft getting Rivers/Gilchrist and then not being good enough the following season to make the playoffs and luck into Drummond in 2013.

I think your dream scenario could be spot on for at least next year as i don't see how we could be all that much more improved unless we really just get very lucky with some serious offseason moves. (and frankly, our Cavs needs to add the most talent we can and back to back lottery selections would help that out)

The most intriguing prospect in this upcoming draft without a doubt is Sullinger.

He could end up being an absolute marquee superstar power forward or he could be a souped up version of Kurt Thomas.

It all comes down to how he evolves his body. If he continues to get leaner, adds more upper body strength etc. then you have a potential franchise player and arguably the best prospect in the draft. I dont care if he isnt uber quick, very few big men can combine his raw power and girth with such an incredibly high basketball iq.

Talent wise he is an actual skilled big man. What a breath of fresh air!!

However, my biggest fear with him is that he gets lazy, gets a little fatter, and becomes a slightly worse version of Elton Brand. That would be a waste.

Sullinger is a very interesting prospect. Cant wait to see how it plays out.

Well assuming the lockout lasts the whole season next year and we have another top lottery pick or hopefully two if Grant can manage it then we will be a struggling team in 2013 even if our two new "star" players are both exceptional because we will have lost a year of trades, a year of development for Irving, and a year of chemistry development. So hopefully we would be bad enough to get Drummond, or at least that is my hopes.

Brand how he is now after knee surgery? Or Brand how he was?

Considering we were once comparing Dasagna Diop to a smaller Shaq, a top prospect ending up as good as Brand (before surgery) is a pretty darn good outcome. Brand peaked at nearly 25 & 10, led the Clips in to the playoffs, and people were giving him MVP consideration.

I am prone to go with Sullinger good upside BIG backside:ball:

Have to disagree with the NBA comparissons for Sullinger. Not too sure how he can be compared to Lamar Odom?? :dunno: They have completely different skill sets. To me he compares more closely to Glen Davis, granted I think Sullinger's ceiling is slightly higher. They both have big bodies with solid post moves, decent midrange jumper, and not very athletic.

I like you analysis. Feel free to correct me if Im wrong but Elton Brand did have about 6 or 7 years averaging close to 20/10-not too shabby. Then the injuries came-whether that happened due to laziness, bad luck, etc, I dont know, but either way if we get a 20/10 guy out of this draft Ill be more than content.

Okay, I'm willing to accept that if Kyrie Irving isn't available, we snatch up Sullinger. Who said it, Smooth? Saying that he wasn't much better than Hickson now? Please, he already understands the game at a level that Hickson will never reach. I take Sullinger only if Irving is off the board. You get a solid player that clearly isn't going to catapult you to a low lottery pick *see Kevin Love*. Then you hope for Austin Rivers in 2012, maybe Drummond in 2013. There's too many studs in the next 2 years. If Irving isn't available, then you grab the most likely to be a solid NBA player, that means Sullinger or T. Jones. I'd prefer Sullinger, but wouldn't complain about Jones.

if he cant learn to finish around the tall trees then he is going to be worse than millsap. i would take a young elton brand, the bulls gave up on him too quickly. Smart power forwars who rebound the ball are a good place to start rebuilding

Given the way things look now the worst the Cavs will draft is #3, correct?

Sullinger at best is Paul Millsap or Al Jefferson, an undersized center that likes to play around the basket. At worst he is Brandon Bass. While I think he will be a good player in this league he isn't someone you would draft and build around.
