All Star 2016

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
What did you expect watching an all-star game?

The State of Origin in the NRL is probably the closest we have to the All Star game.

I know its only a highlights package, but this is how the best verses the best should be - played with feeling, like it means something. Not just to get some more footage for a highlights real.

I'm not going to bother getting into the ridiculousness of the comparison, but you'd have a lot of angry people, not just fans either, if players went full tilt at the all-star game and someone got hurt.

The all-star game does not MATTER. No one is going to risk injury with the playoffs right around the corner. Its silly.

NBA All star game is just to look pretty. The MLB all star game has a purpose (winning league gets home field in the world series) - now it is meaningful.

I'd like them to have the same reward for the NBA all star game. Make it worth something.

The problem is, if it is meaningful, not everyone is going to play. Coaches will play who they feel have the best shot. Imagine if the NBA all star game determined something like home court advantage in the finals. Do you think Kobe and his sucktastic current level of play would have been appreciated? No way. Kobe would have been on the bench after a bunch of bricks. Just like some players remain on the bench in mlb all star games now.

This is okay for baseball, because baseball isn't centered on trying to look pretty, and "posterizing" people. People don't showboat anywhere nearly as much as they do in the NBA. It's a sport-cultural thing. You showboat, you show someone up, you get beaned.

IMHO anyway.

This kid could've walked into the ASG and done the same thing. The players wouldn't even have to change their defense (I'm imagining Boogie lifting up Isaiah Thomas for a dunk...):

Not really. The State of Origin is played mid season over three games. Games are usually played mid week. All of the players involved play for their clubs the weekend before and after the games as there is no weekend off.

I should add that the current State of Origin is a lot cleaner. Usually there are no fights now, but the tackles are just as hard.

Is it also a billion dollar industry?

(By the way, no disrespect to rugby players. You've got to be a tough sonuvabitch to play that sport. I never could.)

Oh, my old man's an All Black,
He wears the silver fern,
But his mates just couldn't take him
So he's out now for a turn.

Da-dit-dit-da da-dit-dit-da da-dit-dit-da-da-da

Well, Dad's played rugby all his life
And it's very plain to see
He's trying very hard
to make an All Black out of me:

"Son don't you worry if you get punched
When you're down in a scrum,
Just you wait 'til there's a ruck
And you can fix the guilty one!"

Oh, my old man's an All Black,
He wears the silver fern,
But his mates just couldn't take him
So he's out now for a turn.

Da-dit-dit-da da-dit-dit-da da-dit-dit-da-da-da
So he's out---- now----- for a turn------ !

Der ditdit Da, Der ditdit Da, Dee ditdit Da da Da

So he's out-- now-- for-- a-- turn!
