Among the all-time great PGs, where do you think he ranks?
Well, in terms of legacy with those 2 dubious MVP's his ranking has to have skyrocketed. I think he's easily top 10, but I find it hard for him to break the top 5. My personal top 5 would be:
Magic
Isiah
Oscar
Walt Frazier (I might put Kidd over him, but both were great defenders and all around players. Jason's poor shooting ability during his prime kinda hurts him though. Walt's championship rings puts him over Kidd for me)
Stockton
CP3 is a sure bet to make that list if he can remain healthy and gets on a decent team.
Not winning a championship or at least taking his team to the Finals like JKidd did is going to hurt him in the end. Though it was unfortunate for Nash to continually keep running into the buzzsaw known as Timmy D's Spurs. The 2 MVP's kinda make up for it, but years from now people are going to be picking apart those consecutive MVP awards and saying he didn't really deserve them.
It's so tough to rank Nash lol. I think in terms of overall skillset he's everything you'd ever want in a PG in terms of shooting, driving, craftiness, cold-bloodedness, and court vision. But he just doesn't have the hardware to match up with the all-time greats, and people will inevitably assume he was just missing "it."
I guess the biggest deficiency for Nash that won't stand the test of time is how wretched his defense is. Unlike Magic, he didn't have a dominant big man to pick up his slack. But I can hardly blame him because the system he's played in doesn't stress defense, so his deficiencies on that end will only stand out more.
He's definitely the greatest shooter of our era imo, and he's an incredible playmaker so that alone should place him in any top 10 or top 8 despite his poor defense. What I don't understand is how he can shoot so well when the defenses he faces are keyed in to trying to contain him. He continually has to create his own shot, and shots for his teammates but he still shoots an incredible percentage. I can't imagine what numbers he'd put up if he wasn't the main focus of the opponent's defensive schemes, and had the luxury of having someone create for him.
