Baker Mayfield: Fire The Cannons

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Weekly Baker/Rosen comp. At 5:08 on Sunday.

Bake: 18-22 82% 238yds 1td.

Rosen: 1-5 20% 17yds 0td.

I know you can't write a guy off for one season. But I don't like him at all.

It'd been an all-time bad blunder if we selected him over Baker.

I'm not going to pound my chest and pretend Baker was always my guy either, he wasn't.

I'd have taken Darnold first, Rosen second, Mayfield third at the time.

But good thing we're just fans and not making these decisions. That's no knock on anyone's football knowledge, regardless what guy you had.

At the end of the day we're fans and not football experts. Nothing wrong having your own opinion.

Being wrong doesn't make you dense. Just like being right doesn't suddenly make you an expert.

No offense to Bernie, but he's going to be leaps and bounds better

Bernie and Couch are lessons as to why you invest in an offensive line whenever possible.

I think both could have been great QB's...

...But by 1990? The Browns aged themselves out of contention and Kosar took some licks.

...And the 1999-2003 Browns never attempted to really address the line to protect a promising QB in Tim Couch.

He’s throwing to JJ Nelson and some guy named Sherfield.

The two teams are in completely different spots, but this isn’t to say I haven’t been blown away by Baker thus far.

I mean, he's got Larry Fitzgerald, who is still really good despite being fifty. And he's also got David Johnson, who is two years removed from one of the greatest seasons of all time. He's got some weapons, and a decent defense too.

I don't know about great. Bernie never had a truly great arm. Had a great mind and relied on that. He was a good QB.

But Baker has tools Bernie could only dream of having.

I really don't think it will be close which guy ends up being better, TBH.

Again, no disrespect to Bernie. I grew up in a 19 jersey and fell in love with the Browns because of him.

Rosen with the pick 6 out of a completely clean pocket.

If Baker never improved and played at this level the next 10 years, I would be extremely happy and 100% content with the drafting of him #1 overall. The fact that he is doing this as a rookie is so encouraging. I can't imagine how upset we would all be right now if we took anyone other than Baker at #1.

You imagine having to face Baker after passing on him at #1? You know he'd be looking to destroy us every single time we went against him. Wouldn't surprise me if Baker pulled a Peyton Manning and told the Browns he'd beat their asses for the next 15 years if they didn't take him.

That’s what elite franchise qbs do. Manning Brady favre Rodgers brees Ben all made lesser receivers look like studs.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not even saying the other skill players suck. But, they weren't tearing it up before Baker took over either. Some were about to be out of the league.

Sure, you got to have some skillset and talent to be productive. But I think the QB is the biggest factor, too.

When you got a guy that can place the ball like Baker does, he'll make everyone around him better. And he does.

Look, maybe Rosen and Darnold end up being solid QBs. I believe you can't literally give up on a guy after on year. Unless its Kizer. :chuckle:

But Mayfield is just special. And those guys aren't ever going to be as good as him.

It's pretty fucking evident.

You're right of course.

But then there's the type of fan who acts like he's an expert, talks down to people who disagree, and then makes excuses if they turn out to be wrong about a player. That still doesn't make then dense, though.

But it does make them douchebags.

This dude is insanely good good lord... we are winning out and I hope like hell we somehow get in at 8-7-1... either way next year is going to be special

I mean it doesn't hurt to not get some mega talent at wide out, but this is very much true.

He apparently had that attitude against Texas Tech, Baylor and the Longhorns for those reasons.

I saw (OLD) tweets from December 2017 today that claimed
"No OU fan saw him as a first round pick"
"His future is to be an NFL backup"
